I’ve held off on writing this scene breakdown for a while because I was waiting for the right words to come to me, but I think it’s high time that I expect they won’t. I’ve written a bit about Heated Rivalry by now, yet each time the nerves take over first, because how do you do such a tremendous show justice? How do you put into words how evocative and breathtaking real joy actually is? I’m not quite sure we do, really, because isn’t that what we’re all trying to figure out? How, for a moment, we were so happy alongside Shane and Ilya. And no scene is more challenging to write about than Ilya and Shane confessing their love for each other in “The Cottage” because it’s so transcendent, freeing, and wholly moving.
We already get such a deep, unrestrained reaction from Ilya when he bares everything to Shane during their phone call in “I’ll Believe in Anything,” but this beat is different because here, he isn’t trying to ease his burdens. He’s just wholly content and safe. He’s lying in bed beside the man he loves, hearing him plan for their future in the middle of the night, and for a second, everything is right between them. Ilya has a real sense of hope that he hasn’t had in a long, long time, and more than that, he’s safe. He’s so safe that he doesn’t know what to do other than to say the words aloud, in his native tongue, with his heart on full display and tears in his eyes.
Throughout the season, Jacob Tierney and the cast have gone out of their way to bring Rachel Reid’s words to life with moments that feel achingly human—real. It often feels so intimate that we feel like we’re prying. Like these beats should be theirs and theirs alone.

At the same time, it’s such a gift that we get to watch them fall in love, making this moment feel even more earned. Storrie’s accent work will perpetually floor me, but it’s especially astounding in this moment as it’s even harder to deliver a scene that’s this emotional, let alone doing it in a language that isn’t your native tongue. But then again, with the masterful work in the phone call scene, this shouldn’t be shocking either. Still, it’s tremendous. It’s indescribable because the repetition and the words I love you then beautifully parallel him stating his family wants more from him, yet here—it’s all his choice. It’s his choice to give his heart fully to Shane. It’s his choice to repeat the words over and over again because it’s liberating. It’s everything to say these words out loud.
And then there’s Shane’s reaction and how Hudson Williams plays off of Storrie with a simple, yet overwhelmingly empathic, “I love you, too. Oh my God, I love you so much.“ Like he also can’t believe the fact that he gets to say these words out loud and carry them forward. Like he’s held it in for so long that releasing them now eases every bit of agony that’s ever been lodged in his heart.
I know that book readers don’t exactly love that the words “Does it feel like agony for you?” were changed to “Does it f–ing kill you, too?” But the sentiment is still the same. Did you ever think that a love like this could be ours? Did you ever picture loving something this intensely that you don’t know what to do about it? Does it overwhelm you in a manner that’s devastating?

We see every emotion on both their faces. We hear it in the way their voices crack. The tears they both shed and the fingers that gently wipe them away. The promise of forever and a safe space is so breathtaking to bear witness to that I cry just thinking about it.
The fact that the scene is shot as a close-up of them with dimmer lighting also helps underscore every word beautifully. It ensures that the depth of their love is held and treasured in the sacred walls of the cottage, etched into both their hearts as they’re tangled in sheets. How it’s filmed adds deeper meaning to every word that’s said out loud and the ones they’ll find along the way, too. The performances, the physical movements, their expressions, it’s all so magnetic that it’s profoundly moving in a manner that’s still so rare on TV.
I’ve watched a lot of love confessions in my career, and long before that. I’ve witnessed so many different kinds, and while there’s depth and beauty in many of them, what we get with Ilya and Shane in Heated Rivalry’s “The Cottage” is unlike anything else. The care placed into ensuring such a vulnerable scene is evocative is no small feat. It’s all because every single person involved cares about how romance and real human emotions are portrayed. They care about authenticity. They care about real, queer joy. And it’s a beautiful, unforgettable scene because of all these details.
