Trying’s Jason Ross Delivers One of the Most Romantic Lines on TV

Nikki Newman and Jason Ross in Trying Season 4.

Four seasons in, and Apple TV’s Trying still finds new and beautifully vulnerable ways to make our hearts flutter. There are a number of changes in the series this time around, one of them being how much time has passed since we left the characters in the Season 3 finale. Most shows would use this time to throw one curveball at another in the couple’s life, but instead, Trying gives Jason Ross one of the most romantic moments on TV while simultaneously allowing Rafe Spall to showcase what an absolute heartthrob he is.

In Trying Season 4, Episode 2, “Ghosting,” Jason and Nikki learn that Bev was into online dating and left a date hanging because of her death. In order to break the news, Nikki decides that she should do it in person, which results in her and Jason essentially going on the date Bev was meant to be on. Jason is apprehensive, but Nikki is into it, so much so that she buys a new dress because the two of them haven’t done anything exciting in the last few years. While this is a norm with many couples, it leads to the type of confrontation that gives viewers the chance to see that their love is still going strong.

Jason doesn’t initially give much when asked about their first meeting, and then he cracks. “I was obsessed with her, George. Absolutely obsessed. I wanted to know everything about her. I wanted to know what her blood type was. I wanted to know if paprika tasted to her the same as it did for me. I wanted to know the layout of her primary school classroom. And I’m still obsessed with her. All of her. And I mean, I even fancy her bloody handwriting.”

So much of the reason this line hits like a ton of bricks is because Spall layers Jason Ross’ words with prodigious heart and captivating sincerity. The words are simple, but they’re deeper than some of the more grand poetic declarations we get because they’re wholeheartedly transparent. Jason isn’t holding anything back in this scene. He’s telling us something, but simultaneously, he’s showing us exactly how that obsession lives inside him because he still looks at Nikki like she put the sun in the sky.

And while all of this is breathtaking, Jason then tops it with, “But I don’t always remember to see you. Because… you’re a feeling now. […] Like warm light.” And isn’t that what real love is at the end of the day—a feeling? One that’s impossible to describe? Yet here, Jason Ross describes the immensity of the emotions without even really trying to. He proves to Nikki and the viewers that she’s such an essential part of him that we never have to concern ourselves with his love running out.

It’s there, profoundly powerful, and a massive part of him he could never live without. In a delivery like this, we understand so much about their marriage because it’s all present in how Jason treats her.
