Prime Video’s My Lady Jane is the electric and wildly charismatic romantic comedy we’ve been waiting for. The adaptation is a must-watch gem, full of sharp banter, hilarious antics, a clever narrative, and astounding performances.
Based on the New York Times Best Selling novel of the same title from Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand, and Jodi Meadows, the adaptation is bound to be a hit with romance aficionados everywhere. The series’ logline calls My Lady Jane “a radical retelling of English royal history, in which King Henry VIII’s son Edward doesn’t die of tuberculosis, Lady Jane Grey isn’t beheaded, and neither is her charming husband, Guildford.” But it’s so much more—far better than anything we’ve had with period pieces in recent years.
Starring Emily Bader as the titular character, Jane Grey is the kind of nuanced, refreshing personality whose arc is easy to follow and invest in. The series also stars Edward Bluemel, Jordan Peters, Dominic Cooper, Anna Chancellor, Rob Brydon, Henry Ashton, Kate O’Flynn, Robyn Betteridge, and Isabella Brownson. There’s no denying that it’s a show tailor-made for fans who adore period pieces and solid, Fleabag–esque storytelling.
My Lady Jane Is Unapologetically Romantic
My Lady Jane packs a punch in every way imaginable, but it especially scintillates with the romance. It’s an enemies-to-lovers done right, with a dash of an arranged marriage and a steady depiction of partners in crime. Bader and Bluemel’s chemistry is magnetic—the perfect dose of spicy and sweet in almost every scene they share, making the love story between Jane and Guildford utterly addicting. The trailers do very little to hide how tethered they are, but in truth, viewers simply aren’t prepared for how exhilarating their romance is. The series explores a myriad of tropes while the characters deal with their chaotic everyday lives, making each episode more riveting than the one before.
It’s a good thing the series will be available for viewers to binge all at once because once you start, there’s no going back. Shows like My Lady Jane often struggle with pacing, but that’s certainly not the case with how Prime Video’s latest adventure goes. While some moments feel slightly off from the overarching theme, it never once takes away from how the story progresses. How we get from point A to B in all areas (and particularly the romance) feels fully earned.

The progression is fast-paced but occurs so gradually that their bickering banter leads to places that are both hot and intensely soft at the same time. The relationship feels believable, and their admiration for one another grows so carefully that when things progress, it feels immensely gratifying for viewers to watch. We begin and end in two different places, showcasing how great love stories grow and evolve with time and understanding. The characters talk to one another; they open up and shut off. They feel real.
The Most Wildest Narratives Make the Series Phenomenal
My Lady Jane is a fleshed-out character-driven series that favors its stars over the outlandish plot, which thus makes the narrative feel more plausible. It’s downright farcical in almost every area, yes, but the entertainment it provides leaves plenty of room to explore beats of vulnerability that make all the dynamics thoroughly compelling.
On paper, the series’ pitch sounds like it could border heavily on being too much—the various subgenres it marries together shouldn’t work as seamlessly as they do, but this is where creator Gemma Burgess’ vision shines because it’s undoubtedly thoughtful. No matter how outlandish the plot might seem, the adaptation on our screens glistens with detailed writing that allows the actors to have a blast. The series knows it’s off the walls, and it uses every bit of that awareness to its advantage.
The narrator, brilliantly brought to life by Oliver Chris, throws viewers deep into the trenches of an established world and allows us to uncover relatability. [There’s a specific line about therapy that made me laugh so hard I had to pause for ten minutes before continuing.]
I’ve often said that shows like Pushing Daisies and CBS’ BrainDead were ahead of their time, but with the way viewers embrace content today, there’s a lot of hope riding on how far My Lady Jane could go with its humor and heart on the frontlines. It’s a series where anything and everything could happen, but never once would it feel like it’s boiled over to the point of no return. As dramatic as it gets, the eccentric beats are contained through the decision to keep characters grounded in wants and emotions that are deeply human.
Reimaginings of any kind, especially with history, leave abundant room to explore and dive into complex matters. The series does this with fascinating plot points that showcase why fantasy romance readers are so entranced by the subgenre. In this case, My Lady Jane has everything: enticing modern music, scenic backdrops, amusing costumes, debauchery, betrayals, love, scheming, deeply complex characters, fantastic lore, plus some of the most hilarious moments on TV in recent years.
