Holidazed: Ian Harding and Erin Cahill Make a Lovely Team in ‘The Hill Family’

Holidazed sparkles in its second episode, “The Hill Family,” as it kickstarts a gorgeous romance between Josh (Ian Harding) and Nora (Erin Cahill) while simultaneously being a reminder of what light at the end of the tunnel looks like. While the episode doesn’t give us their endgame and likely won’t until the finale, everything we get is substantial enough to make rooting for them effortless.

Within the series, this arc is all about coming home and rediscovering what matters in the first place. Josh is on the precipice of a massive career move, but he clearly isn’t happy. At the same time, Nora is simply getting by, trying to be a good mother and town sheriff. Together, they’re helping Nora’s son, Theo, in an ornament contest so heartfelt that I couldn’t see through my tears at the end.

Harding and Cahill are such a lovely pair in Holidazed Season 1, Episode 2, “The Hill Family,” that the dynamic between Josh and Nora is made ten times better. At the start of the series, Josh tells his girlfriend that back in high school, Nora was his equal in every way. Today, we see that equality in the flesh through their interactions, making it that much easier to root for them.

The episode also subtly dives into grief as it allows the feeling of comfort to take the forefront. It underscores how the spirit of Christmas is all about feeling safe and loved in all the little ways by having someone to share our pain with. Few films and TV shows emphasize the importance of hugs. A good hug is one of, if not the most, healing gestures we’re capable of as human beings. Holding someone can give them everything they need, and it’s one of the smallest things we can do.

So it’s gorgeous that we see this come to life through Josh and Nora when she gives him the kind of hug that allows him to feel something for the first time since he’s been back home. Yes, she’s teaching by example, but it becomes a defining moment that highlights how they could be good to each other—how they could feel like home and all the things Theo describes in the light star he wants to create.

Theo is the real star of the episode—the sheer wholesome heart that we get with this kid is no small feat. Sebastian Billingsley-Rodriguez holds his own tremendously with the older actors, delivering some genuinely heartwarming moments to our screen. The moment he completes the star and then wins the award made me cry so much that I had to pause to catch myself. With this arc, Holidazed Season 1, Episode 2, “The Hill Family,” becomes a story about taking care of others and showing up for them. Josh, Nora, and Theo make an exceptional team throughout, and they come to life in the last few minutes as we understand how they’re each a little bit better since starting this little project.

The story ultimately examines why it’s essential to listen to each other, and this idea of trusting feelings over facts at times. Josh’s journey isn’t just about coming home, but it’s about truly understanding what he and his family genuinely need. It’s about discovering what true happiness looks like and how it revolves around finding the people who will not only make you better but happier. Nora and Theo do both for Josh—they bring life back into him and teach him the meaning of comfort solely by being themselves. With them, every part of him that was once dimmed rekindles to a point of no return. So, while the episode ends on a cliffhanger, his choice is obvious. He wants to stay. Nora and Theo are his people, and in the short amount of time, they’ve given him far more than anyone else has.

It’s impressive how the episode packs so much and ensures that the relationship is worth rooting for. The characters all feel fleshed out and easy to empathize with. There are genuinely hilarious moments, and all the heart gives viewers a great balance of emotions.
