It’s been a year since the best thing on Prime Video aired, and it’s still canceled. It’s been a year since fans met Lady Jane Grey and Guildford Dudley, falling hard and fast for one of the most addicting relationships in any historical fantasy ever. My Lady Jane wasn’t just good—it was sensational, unique, well-written, and thoroughly entertaining from beginning to end, yet we were forced to say goodbye way too soon.
In the many articles the team at Lady Geeks has written about My Lady Jane, we’ve said that all we really wanted was a maximum of one more season—a proper conclusion, if nothing else. But apparently, even that’s asking for too much because all it’s been is radio silence from Prime Video while fans have run one campaign after another, doing their part to increase viewership of the show with petitions and excellent promotion. No one has forgotten the fact that the series was initially released all at once and during the Olympics with limited to no promotion, refusing to give the show time to grow. Still, to this day—one year later—new fans are discovering the series and loving every minute of it.
My Lady Jane was special, achieving something so few series do when they attempt to marry modern beats with historical elements. The series’ creators not only manage this brilliant interlacing beautifully, but they’ve also sprinkled in fantasy elements, which could’ve made it too farcical. Instead, the genres heightened the stakes and built upon the tension, making every narrative beat engaging, profound, and, more importantly, memorable.
I can sing praises about the show for hours. I have—with every scene breakdown and feature and review—but this article is all about my frustrations again. It’s about the fact that I still can’t believe such a clever, incredibly entertaining show was axed way too soon. Whether it was the romantic storylines or the platonic relationships with women, My Lady Jane had it all.
A year is enough time to sit with something and perhaps reconsider what it’s like to come down from the adrenaline of something that’s evoked incomparable joy. Did I maybe think it was too good because it was exactly what I needed at the time? Did it provide all the romantic tropes I particularly adore, with incredible actors bringing the characters to life, and that’s why I latched on? Nope—it’s that good. From beginning to end, My Lady Jane was inimitable. Still, to this day, every time a fan video crosses my social media feed or I find myself rewatching a clip or two, I feel the same giddy excitement I did the first time.
In my initial review of the series, I said, “Prime Video’s My Lady Jane is the electric and wildly charismatic romantic comedy we’ve been waiting for. The adaptation is a must-watch gem, full of sharp banter, hilarious antics, a clever narrative, and astounding performances.” I still stand by this. Years from now, the series will continue to come up in articles about some of the most absurd cancellations. New fans will begin watching and telling their friends. Surely, when Emily Bader steals the show as Poppy Wright in Emily Henry’s film adaptation of People We Meet on Vacation, people want to see more of the leading lady’s excellence. My Lady Jane will be here to welcome them home. And if anyone needs me, I’ll be rewatching the show for the umpteenth time.
