It’s official, Ali Hazelwood’s The Love Hypothesis has cast its Olive Smith and Dr. Adam Carlsen, and all is momentarily right in the world. As one of the first of Hazelwood’s books to dominate the romance book scene, this casting is not only significant, but it feels like a long time coming. The right time. The right place. The right people.
The news first broke via Deadline on July 16, with Lili Reinhart announcing that she’ll star in and executive produce the adaptation from Amazon MGM Studios, with news of Tom Bateman’s casting coming on July 17. And yeah, they fit the descriptions, all the way down to their height difference, which already has me itching to see the full film right this second.
The Love Hypothesis is a fake dating romance set in Stanford, featuring a third-year PhD student and a faculty advisor who spark up a faux relationship in order to meet their academic objectives. Naturally, the fabricated emotions turn into something bigger, resulting in the kind of trope-filled, glorious romance that’s a blueprint in more ways than one.

What began as Star Wars/Reylo fan fiction evolved into something bigger and more extraordinary thanks to the excellence that Hazelwood accomplishes with her astute research, brilliantly page-turning writing style, and narrative world-building. Olive and Adam start it all, and it’s a glorious thing that they do because the Ali Hazelwood universe is one I want to continue vicariously living in.
I recently reread the book, and unsurprisingly, it’s even better the second time around. It’s the kind of kick your feet in the air and squeal with every new development because the pacing is so well done that everything about it feels earned. From their very first interaction to the love declaration, Hazelwood doesn’t miss a single beat in crafting an engaging and compelling romance. And all the pining? I can’t wait to see it on my screen.
