We understand how jarring it can be when a cast member who’s loved suddenly exits a show. It’s happened to us far too many times with shows we care for. It’s even worse when it’s half of a romantic relationship because it can feel like you’re being cheated out of something. Still, sometimes these things happen, and the end result can in fact be good. In the case of Miss Scarlet, it’s a good thing, and the show deserves a hyped audience. If for nothing else than this specific Miss Scarlet Season 6 sneak peek should be enough to get you excited. Hopeful, even.
We’ve said it during our Season 5 review, but the change is not only pleasantly surprising, but the budding relationship between Eliza and Alexander becomes even more special in the finale, “Dangerous Liaisons.”
As mentioned in our scene breakdown, “This scene between Eliza and Inspector Blake essentially takes their relationship from work associates to friends. Friends who can trust each other and friends who can be open with each other, because that’s what’s necessary to break down the walls both characters shield themselves with. The scene also features careful close-up shots to emphasize the tenderness that’s present between them and the intimacy that’s growing from the trust they’re carefully cementing. There aren’t many wide shots outside of Eliza first knocking on the door, because everything we get afterward is meant to exhibit the distance that they’re slowly going to close. It’s meant to signify that there’s something here worth focusing on—looking more inward toward.”
Now, if we look at this Miss Scarlet Season 6 sneak peek alone, it’s clear that there’s something more. Something bigger is happening. The way Blake looks at her is so telling of how much he already cares. He’s infatuated by Eliza. He has no plans to dim her light, but he also has no plans to see her stop working. Whatever she’s presenting, he’s fully into it. Because of this, in every way, he’s the perfect fit for her. It’s what makes us think that if these two do start a romance, it’ll actually be a solid choice that’s consciously driven to ensure they’re both happy. Equal on all fronts. There’s something achingly romantic about Blake’s gaze here, and everything that we’ve seen from Tom Durant-Pritchard thus far has shown us that this specific look isn’t one that’s given to everyone. It’s special. It’s far from platonic in such an obvious way that it’ll be genuinely shocking if there are no feelings involved.
In an exclusive interview with Masterpiece PBS, creator Rachael New has also said, “I guess I can say her love life flourishes, but it’s complicated still. Her profession causes her problems, her ambition to succeed…still, there is that clash with personal happiness. But there’s still lots of adventure and fun. This season has more of an emotional punch.”
If anyone needs us, we’ll be fixating on the words “her love life flourishes” because this time, it really does feel like we’re going to see something more than what we’ve gotten in the past. This time, the cards feel like they may align in Eliza’s favor. This time, it feels like the happy ending might stick and turn into the type of romance we’ve always been hoping for.
And listen, where there’s a single dad romance with a soft hero, you can catch us in the front row seat.
