Happy’s Place Season 2, Episode 6 Review: ‘Izzy and the Professor’

Isabella in Happy's Place Season 2 Episode 6.

Like last week’s “Mouse in the House,” Happy’s Place delivers another account of hypocrisy while ending its mid-season finale with a bang through two hilarious guest stars. At this point, anything relating to romance on the show continues to be frustrating because we’re still teetering around the secret while Emmett pretends everything is fine. (Truly, my patience is wearing thin.) But everything else hilariously delivers something memorable, especially where Bobbie and Isabella’s bond is concerned.

In many ways, everything that we get between the sisters in “Izzy and the Professor” proves that when this secret is out, it’s going to be even more devastating because it’s something they both deserved to know sooner.

In many ways, “Izzy and the Professor” is an incredibly strong episode to acknowledge power imbalances. Yes, Isabella is a consenting adult, and a relationship with her college professor isn’t as toxic as it would’ve been if she were younger, but it makes total sense that Bobbie would acknowledge that they’re metaphorically on different planes.

At the same time, it makes total sense that Isabella would fire back and point out that so are Bobbie and Emmett. Reba McEntire and Belissa Escobedo are both so great during their individual fights with inanimate objects, plus the beats they argue together, that a large part of the episode’s charm lies in the performances. It’s a well-written argument in the sense that it thoughtful brings the sisters closer together while simultaneously recognizing something that not every show does. And this is especially the case when it’s some sort of a boss/employee situation.

In addition, because this conversation feels significant for the two of them to have, it continues to showcase the bigger weight of Emmett’s secret. Again, Happy’s Place is a sitcom, so they can essentially choose to make light of the situation and let everything be okay when it comes out. But given the value of their relationship and how great the actors are, it’d be unfair not to give them the platform to bring even more emotional performances to life. It wouldn’t be good writing if we didn’t get legitimate angst that would then make their reconciliation sweeter. But I digress, if nothing else, at least Bobbie and Isabella are continuing to strength their bond.

A+ Guest Stars

There’s deep nostalgia in sitcoms, and there’s a lot of joy in a perfectly staged entrance. Happy’s Place Season 2, Episode 6, “Izzy and the Professor,” delivers an absolute riot by featuring Christopher Lloyd and Carol Kane as role-playing lovers. It’s hilarious, genuinely joyful, and stellar on all fronts in terms of feeding the nostalgia with a moment that the show will leave us with for the mid-season finale. Like last year’s “Ho-Ho Howey,” it’s excellent in every way.

There’s a lot for us to sit with before the show returns in the new year, and with everything that we have about conversations, here’s to hoping that a big one finally takes place in 2026.

Stray Thoughts

  • THE FOURTH P. What a delivery.
  • Takoda remains the BEST.
