High Potential Season 2, Episode 8, “The One That Got Away: Part Two” Spoilers Ahead
High Potential is back with the kind of new year premiere that’s so deliciously intentional in the writing that almost every spoken word makes me want to scream. (In a good way.) But all that aside, it concludes the case presented in “The One That Got Away” by making every little detail surprising enough to stick the landing while making the entire episode riveting, even with the open doors at the end. And more than anything, it delivers the type of cliffhanger that’s going to make waiting for next week’s episode way harder than it already is when it comes to this show.
At its crux, this show is about all the small details that make the bigger story what it is, and everything that we see with Morgan back in action proves just how valuable she is to the force. But does that mean that her involvement also complicates matters too much? Only time will tell.
The Way Karadec Knows Morgan Continues to Be Everything
Nothing is more hilarious than Karadec taking a beat to clock the fact that Morgan and Rhys slept together, but immediately knowing that something is up when she flees the case too soon, prompting him to follow her. But there’s something even bigger here, and it’s what I’ve been constantly harping on in these highlights, and it’s the fact that Karadec fully knows he’s a better detective with Morgan beside him. He also values her safety more than anything else, so of course, he’d follow her. Of course, he’d be extra cautious. Of course, he’d emphasize that he doesn’t need Wagner to go off on her again because he hated watching that whole exchange while standing back. (And what Morgan doesn’t even know yet is that he threatened their captain, too.)
He hates not being in the loop with her plans because they often come with putting her life in danger, and we already know that’s not something that he’ll ever allow on his watch. High Potential Season 2, Episode 8, “The One That Got Away: Part 2” also does something extra delicious with the banter in this moment as they continue punctuating the word “need” and adding layers to what it means beyond the words they’re speaking out loud. It’s why Morgan apologizes afterward because she gets his concerns, and she knows that the risks put him in a tough spot, too. It continues to strengthen their dynamic while ensuring that they stay equal partners, and I love every minute of it.
“I work with Morgan. On every case.”
Has anyone been keeping tabs on how many times Karadec has defended Morgan to Wagner, because if not, I think we need to start. Here’s the thing: at this point, anyone with eyes can see that Karadec is fully enamored by Morgan, and Wagner is no exception. He knows, deep down in his bones, he gets it. He sees it. Still, Karadec emphasizing that he doesn’t want the two of them to be split apart on cases is a perfect way to set his foot down and underscore just how important their partnership is to him.
She waltzed right into their lives like mismatched sunshine of some kind, and he hasn’t looked back since. When the time comes, and this “will they/won’t they” slow burn turns into something bigger, we don’t have to question who fell first, because the answer will always be Adam Karadec.
And it’s everything about their partnership that makes this godawful job ten times better and easier because she’s beside him. In the same way that he put his foot down by telling Wagner that the two of them would have a problem if he ever yelled at Morgan again, he’s essentially telling him that splitting the two of them apart would be a bad, bad concept. And it’s exceptional in every way because this is exactly what Morgan meant for him to communicate back to Wagner, and the fact that he does it proves that he fully understands exactly what she’d want and need. Emphasis on the word need.
What Happens to Arthur at the End of High Potential Season 2, Episode 8?
Stress levels are through the roof now that something has clearly happened to Arthur, and we see the white haired man watching Morgan from a distance at the bar. A part of me thinks that Arthur is still alive, but probably ran at the realization that going to the precinct would be more dangerous, but another part knows that on shows like High Potential, characters like him tend to die before the story’s over.
Yet, I hope that isn’t the case because it continues to be super comforting that Selena is helping Morgan as best as she can and that Arthur is on it, too. It’s making everything feel more connected in a way that makes the show extra entertaining, so here’s to hoping this isn’t the end.
Stray Thoughts
- NEED. NEED. NEED. I love this word.
- The language in this episode is my kryptonite.
- “Then you better watch your a$s.”
- Now, why does this last scene look like a happy hour double date?
- Looking real jealous there, Karadec. She’s yours, bud. Relax.
- OH MY GOD, the ending?!!!!
