High Potential Season 2, Episode 7, “The One That Got Away” Spoilers Ahead
In its fall finale, High Potential takes us through an art heist (not at the Louvre), and unsurprisingly delivers a cliffhanger that’ll have us maybe even more riled up since the Season 1 finale. Still, for an episode that’s so case-heavy, we get two strong moments of character development that touch on the found family that makes the show so special.
The episode rightfully leaves everyone on edge, yet it’s so fascinating how we’re closer to not only learning more about Roman, but maybe even understanding Wagner. More than that, it’s the kind of solid episode that continues to reiterate why we’ve been missing cable shows and procedurals. With the show’s record-breaking ratings this season, we get proof that steady release schedules and weekly drops provide a more exciting viewing experience.
Karadec Threatens Wagner
I was five seconds away from throwing my remote when Karadec almost told Morgan to calm down, but maybe I should’ve expected that his silence would lead to something bigger. As thrilling as it would’ve been to watch him stand up for her while Wagner yelled at her, this is the same man who knows her so well that he knows she can hold her own. She doesn’t need him to come to her defense, and she doesn’t need a bigger problem than what’s already happening at this moment.
And yet, he’s also her partner, so he owes it to himself and to Wagner to make sure that their new captain knows that what happened earlier at the precinct should never happen again. In other words, Karadec uttering the words, “Next time you lose your cool with her, I suggest you find a different approach,” is his equivalent of a romance novel’s “touch her and die.” We didn’t even need to hear the next words out of his mouth because the threat was explicitly clear in his tone. Still, it’s a beautiful, beautiful thing to have him follow up with, “Because if you don’t, it’s going to put you and me in the position where things will definitely go south.”
The emphasis on the word definitely is where Daniel Sunjata is so good at conveying so much in subtle manners, and it’s everything we need to know that the way he respects Morgan isn’t something he takes lightly. He trusts her implicitly and admires her tactics, even when they aren’t by the book. It’s why she’s here in the first place, and his decision to make that crystal clear to their captain is also what feeds into making their slow burn so enticing. Authority doesn’t matter. Very little does when it comes to how Karadec prioritizes Morgan.
Ava’s Heartfelt Conversation With Arthur
We know very little about Arthur, but High Potential Season 2, Episode 7, “The One That Got Away,” makes it abundantly care that his heart is in the right place. He could’ve chosen not to give Ava any more information than he had to, but the fact that he realizes her desperation and desires to know her father is a good thing. It tells us that he really does care about Roman and his family, but more than that, that he knows Roman. Or, at the very least, knows enough about him where it matters.
It’s also worth noting that the way he talks to Ava says plenty as well because he’s treating her like an adult who’s continuing to go through something traumatizing. Maybe he knows firsthand what it feels like not to have a parent nearby, or maybe he’s just a decent guy who understands the importance of transparency. Regardless, it’s a lovely scene that feels necessary.
More than that, it’s also a great thing that Ava mentions she’ll tell her mom about the conversation, given the progress the women made in “Chasing Ghosts.” But really, Ava wanting to hear things about her dad’s character from someone who isn’t her mom also makes perfect sense because Arthur doesn’t have to tell her what she wants to hear. He can be fully honest because he gains nothing by lying, so realizing that Roman is a good person can be so great for Ava’s character journey in the future.
And the ending of all of this? The specific man in the photo going after Arthur? I’m stressed. I’m also hopeful that the show won’t kill him off or anything like that because it’d then lead to even worse situations. Yet, there’s obviously something huge here, so I can’t wait until we continue unraveling it.

- Karadec and Soto being trusted with the backpack makes me feel all sorts of things. I love love love watching them all working together.
- An art thief episode, while there’s a Louvre heist? Coincidences like this need to be studied. It always makes me laugh so hard 😂
- Wagner shaving his mustache should be illegal. STOP GIVING US MUSTACHES THEN TAKING THEM AWAY!!
- The music in this episode is giving Challengers.
- “You practiced that in the mirror?” is such a perfect insult.
- Morgan’s outfit in this episode is A+.
- Was this car chase really necessary? It feels childish.
- Karadec, stop calling him “sir,” it’s so weird.
- “Data shows taller people get promoted first.” As a short person, I need someone to study this because I also deserve good things.
- This jewel thief man is too confident. Your accent doesn’t do diddly squat to me.
- Thrilled to know High Potential will eventually deliver a heated make-out session with Karadec and Morgan that’s probably way hotter than this. (Right?!!! Right?!! Slow burn, let’s go!!)
- Oh my God, do not harm a single hair on Arthur’s head, Pecka Rollins wannabe. (This won’t make any sense to non-Shadow and Bone fans, but roll with it.)
