The Rookie Season 8, Episode 3, “The Red Place” Spoilers Ahead
Welcome to Chenford Chats, a column dedicated solely to highlighting Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen’s interactions during the latest episode of The Rookie.
Patience isn’t Tim Bradford’s forte, but his inability to say no to Lucy Chen is undoubtedly his weakness. And it’s a welcomed weakness, because who in their right mind would ever say no to her? I wouldn’t. The Rookie continues to give us sweet moments with the two reuniting, and the softness of their exchanges remains the strongest part of it all.
We don’t get much, given how extreme the actual case is, and I do wish we could’ve gotten some sort of a conversation, but it also makes total sense that exhaustion and emotional turmoil would lead Lucy to wanting a more calm night. Still, this is where everything’s so soft and lovely because it’s so obvious that Tim would do anything to ensure that this time, all goes well.
He’s tired, too. There’s no question about that. They’ve both had rough days. When they have their last moment of the episode on the couch during the night, he could’ve easily brought up their morning conversation about boxes, but instead, he sides with her. He chooses to put aside his pride and instead focuses on how he can make things easier for Lucy. And this is exactly what a partnership is, because come tomorrow, Lucy may return the favor. She may be the one carrying more, so that he can spend time observing the unpacking from the couch.
The Rookie Season 8, Episode 3, “The Red Place,” isn’t exactly the kind of episode that lends itself to a lengthy analysis, but these are ultimately the moments that make the Chenford moments so lovely—the quiet amid the storm. The brief beats where a single expression gives us so much, that’s where the heart of it lies. Tim doesn’t want to mess this up. He knows he hurt Lucy, and while she isn’t holding it over in his head, he meant it in “Czech Mate” when he promised he’d be the best communicator. He proved it to us in “Fast Andy” by showing up. And this week, when he realizes that his impatience upsets and probably triggers her, he makes the conscious choice to give her time. He steps back. He changes his tone.
And this is all so essential when it comes to fortifying their foundation again because he’s affirming to her that he can read her. He knows her. He’s paying attention to all her cues. At the same time, both Melissa O’Neil and Eric Winter continue to do so much with the beats they’re given to underscore the emotions tucked behind the words they’re speaking out loud. It makes the scenes stand out in their simplicity because it’s proof of how their efforts are intentional. They’re going to do everything in their power to make it work this time. He’s going to do everything in his power to keep his promises.
