We’ve been waiting years for Bridgerton to finally get to Benedict and Sophie’s story. Now, with Season 4, we’re finally getting to see how the TV version will take on Julia Quinn’s iconic An Offer from a Gentleman. But if one season and one book just aren’t enough, it’s time to go in search of more books like An Offer from a Gentleman!
Whether you’re watching for the fairytale vibes, the secret identity drama, or the class tensions, these books have it all in spades. Get ready for your post-Bridgerton reading spree and add these to your TBR pronto.
Marry Me By Midnight by Felicia Grossman
Most books like An Offer from a Gentleman mimic Bridgerton‘s “rich man/poor woman” dynamic. Grossman’s novel, set among the Jewish elite of 1830s London, flips the script. Isabelle is an heiress in high demand on the marriage mart, but she’s smart enough not to trust anyone’s intentions. Instead, she throws a series of festivals, where she secretly recruits Aaron, the synagogue custodian, to help gauge her suitors’ loyalties. As the transaction between them grows into trust and even passion, they struggle with the knowledge that society’s rules would never approve their match.
Bringing Down the Duke by Evie Dunmore
The “offer” part doesn’t show up in quite as many books as An Offer from a Gentleman. Dunmore, however, doesn’t shy away. It’s the 1870s: the age of the suffrage movement, and bluestocking Annabelle is in the thick of it all. The movement needs support from powerful men, so she infiltrates the household of the icy Sebastian, Duke of Montgomery. Despite a series of events that throw them together, Sebastian can’t afford (literally) to marry a common country girl. And Annabelle is far too proud to accept any other relationship arrangement.
A Kiss at Midnight by Eloisa James
A mainstay of historical romance, James goes full Cinderella (with a few unexpected reversals) for this one. Kate’s stepmother forces her to attend a ball, where she meets Gabriel: a ruthless and decidedly not charming prince. Their clash of wits only highlights their attraction, but Gabriel is already engaged to a foreign princess to fulfill his political ambitions. Giving in to their feelings could ruin lives, but they just might not resist!
A Countess Below Stairs by Eva Ibbotson
If you’re looking for a gentler option among the many books like An Offer from a Gentleman, try Ibbotson’s sweet historical romance. This one pulls out all the stops: a secret identity, a maid/lord romance, and scheming villains! Anna is a Russian countess now working as a maid in England after fleeing the revolution. Devoted to her work, she wins over the staff — and Rupert, the new young earl. But Anna’s true identity can’t stay hidden forever, and the truth could either destroy her new beginning or offer a path to happily ever after.
Bookshop Cinderella by Laura Lee Guhrke
Despite the title, this historical is really more like one part Cinderella, one part Pygmalion. To win a bet, the charming duke Maximillian promises to turn shy, spinster bookseller Evie into the most sought-after woman in society. Hoping to save her bookshop, Evie goes along with his plan. She’s whisked into his glittering life and suddenly has opportunities she never dreamed of. Unfortunately for them, they catch feelings for each other. And when scandal threatens, Max will struggle to convince Evie to choose a life with him over what she’s always known.
If the Shoe Fits by Julie Murphy
Prefer contemporaries but still looking for books like An Offer from a Gentleman? Try this Cinderella retelling, part of the Disney-affiliated “Meant to Be” series. Cindy, an aspiring shoe designer, agrees to fill a last-minute slot on her stepmother’s reality dating show. All she hopes for is a little publicity to help launch her fashion career. Instead, Cindy accidentally becomes a body-positivity icon and starts falling for Henry, the season’s “bachelor.” It’s a lighter, fun read that still hits those fairytale-like notes!
A Wager at Midnight by Vanessa Riley
Instead of sneaking out to a ball, Riley’s heroine Scarlett has different priorities. She sneaks out, disguised as a man, to attend medical lectures. When her luck runs out, Stephen, a family friend and doctor, swoops in to rescue her reputation. Although they share a goal of helping others through science, neither sees the other as a likely love match, and long-held secrets threaten to tear apart their fragile truce. It’s not quite a cross-class “forbidden” romance, but if you love Sophie Beckett/Baek’s determination, courage, and journey of finding her place in the world, you’ll love this.
Always Be My Duchess by Amalie Howard
If you care more about the class-difference trope than the Cinderella or masquerade elements, this Pretty Woman-inspired romance belongs on your list of books like An Offer from a Gentleman. Lysander, Duke of Montcroix, needs a fake fiancée to close a business deal. He makes an offer (a strictly business one, that is!) to Nève, a ballerina recently fired for refusing to become a rich patron’s mistress. What starts out as purely financial soon becomes a real emotional entanglement, even as both Lysander and Nève struggle to let themselves believe other people can, in fact, be good.
The Muse of Maiden Lane by Mimi Matthews
Benedict Bridgerton’s artistic dreams are a big part of his character, and if you want more of that, check out this historical romance! Equestrienne Stella is almost always overlooked, thanks to her brother and guardian’s restrictions and her prematurely silver hair. One person, however, sees the real her: Teddy, an artist left partially paralyzed by scarlet fever. He’d never risk her reputation by asking her to model for him, but at the same time, all he wants is to paint her… and to win her heart.
This Much Is True by Vivienne Lorret
Let’s flip the script on books like An Offer from a Gentleman! This time, it’s the male lead who has a secret identity (and yes, masks are involved). By day, Jasper is a viscount with a reputation for being clumsy and awkward. By night, he’s a dashing highwayman with a vigilante sense of justice. When Althea, a playwright who’s almost “on the shelf,” writes a story with uncanny similarities to his actions, he fears his secret could get out. Even more frightening: there’s a spark between them that could throw both their lives into chaos.
