Happy’s Place Season 2, Episode 11, “Dart to the Heart” Spoilers Ahead
With incredible performances from the whole cast and significant character work, Happy’s Place delivers its strongest episode of the season with “Dart to the Heart.” This is the episode we’ve been waiting for since “Silence Was Golden” and last week’s “No,” where the show finally addressed where Isabella and Emmett stand after the secrets come to light.
Elsewhere, a friendly competition of darts unites the entire tavern staff with hilarious moments that are both laugh-out-loud funny and oddly unifying.
Happy’s Place Season 2, Episode 11 Rightfully Centers Isabella and Emmett
Since the secret’s come to light, tension has simmered between Emmett and Isabella. And while it’s understandable that it’d initially focus on his relationship with Bobbie, Isabella catching up and sitting with her anger later makes complete sense. The thought of all she could’ve had with Happy comes to a head when more what-ifs understandably bombard her. And when that happens, avoidance is easier than confrontation.
Both Belissa Escobedo and Rex Linn do such a fine job with their performances this season, as they allow the characters’ quiet moments to showcase just how much this is bothering them. It’s the subtlety of it that then makes their conversation by the end thoroughly stick the landing as a beat that makes both the episode and the show stand out.
People often underestimate how vital an honest conversation can be in fiction when it needs to happen, and how it can feel earned if it’s done organically. The pacing of this moment also works because the series isn’t waiting too long to drag it out, but instead, Bobbie’s pushing makes it feel right. And ultimately, where it all works is Emmett saying that he was trying to protect himself. Happy was wrong to force him into keeping such a huge secret, but he was also wrong in not recognizing that Isabella isn’t just a name, but a person. The burden that’s placed on him is unfair, yet at the same time, we can’t fault him for being a human. We can’t fault him for choosing to take the easy route.
Now, we can recognize that his decision to apologize to Isabella and acknowledge that he didn’t understand the weight of his actions is significant. We can give credit where it’s due, that in this moment, Isabella can also speak freely about all that she’s missed out on and wanted during the times when it was just her and her mom.
Escobedo is especially great in this scene as she takes in all of Emmett’s words and processes what he’s telling her. For a beat, she isn’t a grown woman, but a little girl, understanding that there was nothing she could have done to change the situation or the circumstances. She’s a woman understanding that here in this moment, everything is as it should be with the found family she has.
The final scene with everyone teamed up in a game of darts makes Happy’s Place Season 2, Episode 11, “Dart to the Heart” an absolute joy ride. This is the show I signed up for and adore. This is the show that’s an absolute comfort week after week—episodes like this hit twice as hard, and everything is better because of them.
Stray Thoughts
- Steve and the rootbeer took me out.
- Learning that Isabella used to write Happy letters gutted me. But I’m also so glad she got to share such a lovely scene with Bobbie to talk about them and read them outloud. Plus, it parallels the scene at the end really beautifully with the angry letter that she writes to Emmett.
- “You weren’t just a name anymore.” 😭
