High Potential Season 2, Episode 15, “Pie in the Sky” Spoilers Ahead
With three episodes left, High Potential wastes no time bringing in Willa Quinn after last week’s identity reveal in “If You Come For the Queen.” At this point, it’s safe to assume we’ll have some more concrete answers by the time the season’s over, but for the most part, “Pie in the Sky” is full of games and a compelling case that’s mostly riveting.
On a show like High Potential, it’s easy to be distrustful when it comes to characters outside of our core players, but it’s even more challenging now with more questions than answers.
Protect Soto At All Costs
If anything happens to Soto in the hands of this Willa woman, I’m going to have words. A lot of words. Procedurals aren’t always known to be kind to their captains and leading figures (cough, 9-1-1, cough), but I swear if anyone touches Soto… For the most part, the meeting with Willa is underwhelming because her games don’t seem all that terrifying, but I’m intrigued by how far her connections go and the connections she has to the bigger story. One of the best plot twists on any show that I often think of is in Linda Hamilton’s character on Chuck, and while that’s a whole other wheelhouse I won’t get into, we have to wonder what on earth Willa’s motives are.
At the same time, it’s so compelling to see Soto hold her own against someone with as much supposed power because it’s yet another reminder of the lengths she’s willing to go for her team. There’s nothing Soto wouldn’t do for Morgan at this point, and the distances she’s going to in the Roman case continue to be excellent proof of it. It’s also enormously telling that she’s taking on everything on her own, choosing to be the kind of leader who doesn’t just sit back while others do the work, but one who fights just as hard. The stark contrast between her and Wagner, who’s technically the captain remain so obvious, and when this all comes to a head, it’s going to be incredible to see how the show presents it to us.
“You don’t get Morgan Gillory to do anything”
We haven’t gotten any substantial Morgan and Karadec scenes since “The Faust and the Furious,” but it’s easy to appreciate that Adam Karadec will continue to remind us of how well he knows his girl. Or, partner, I suppose. And the fact that he continues not to care about how he’s talking to Wagner, only that he’s somehow defending Morgan, is everything to me.
It’s also fascinating considering the episode’s case highlights how love can often force people to do unthinkable things, but it’s so starkly different with Karadec because it’s in this exact sentence that he reminds us of how much he respects Morgan’s agency. He trusts her. He believes in her. He’d never tell her to do anything, and he knows that if she makes up her mind about something, then he’ll trust the path she’s going to go on. Contrary to Teddy and Heidi, the choice not to honor his wishes and instead focus on his career is her downfall.
It might not mean anything, or it can mean everything, but ultimately, a man knowing his partner inside and out is always something to admire when it comes to a procedural. It’s what we’ve seen with all the greats in the past, and it’s exactly what makes rooting for Morgan and Karadec as a couple so effortless.
What Is Wagner’s Deal?
Wagner continues to be the most confusing human being, and High Potential Season 2, Episode 15, “Pie in the Sky,” doesn’t exactly clear anything up for us. He tells Morgan that part of the reason he’s so distrustful is that he comes from a family that consistently tested him. He makes a point that he knows Soto and Karadec are good people, and he insists on helping Morgan, but it’s still so hard to understand his motives, and Steve Howey is doing such an exceptional job of making him complex. There’s something to be said about casting an actor who plays such a lovable character in a sitcom like Reba and making him suspicious, which allows the art of questioning him to be even more intriguing as a viewer.
Because on the one hand, I want to trust that he has honorable intentions, but on the other hand, there’s a clear disconnect between him and all the other characters that’s entirely his doing. He tries to open up to Morgan, but it’s so awkward every time, and the convenience of his entrance in the show and the team finding out more about Roman is also raising a few red flags. In the end, he could end up being a bystander or another puppeteer in a larger game, but it’s all unclear now. Plus, where on earth has he been for the last few episodes? How does the captain just disappear?
