The Rookie Season 8, Episode 16, “Out of Time” Spoilers Ahead
Welcome to Chenford Chats, a column dedicated solely to highlighting Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen’s interactions during the latest episode of The Rookie.
After what felt like weeks since “Spy Games,” The Rookie finally gives us substantial material for Chenford again in “Out of Time.” They may not be the ones talking or even interacting all that much, but the material we get with Tim asking around for advice on the engagement ring is everything I could’ve hoped for with these two before an actual proposal.
Tim Bradford Is Officially Planning to Propose in “Out of Time”
There’s something easy and comforting about the opening scene between Tim and Lucy that seamlessly paints a picture of why it’s time for an engagement. For starters, they’re basically already married. She’s talking about a specific neighbor, and he’s casually leaning against the counter, rebutting her suggestions about dinner. The topic has nothing to do with them, but it is about their relationship because it’s yet another reminder that he listens. He pays attention to everything she says because, after their breakup, Tim is falling in love deeper and deeper. It’s so obvious that it’s legitimately adorable. He’s more in love with her than he ever thought possible, and we see it clear as day when she rushes to get dressed while he stands still and smiles.
Eric Winter does an effective job painting all the emotions moving around in Tim as he pauses and sends out the text. That’s my girl, he’s thinking. I’m going to marry her, he’s hoping. How did I get so lucky with her, he’s pondering. Because one of the most effortlessly distinguishable facial expressions is the one where Tim wonders just how lucky he is that Lucy chooses him back. Every single day. How lucky he is that she loves him too. It’s that momentary awe of recognizing that he’s not only with the woman he loves, but he’s with his entire world. It’s a brief instant, but profound nevertheless, and really, I’d even argue it’s the most telling moment in The Rookie Season 8, Episode 16, “Out of Time.”
And then there’s the ring—the gaudy, hideous heirloom that he himself knows is awful but is hoping to be wrong about. We all somehow imagined that both Angela and Nyla would be part of the conversation, right? We knew he’d bring them in and that they’d be as giddy as they were because again—it’s about time. It’s finally happening. And that’s what’s vital because Tim proposing to Lucy is a big deal. It’s something most people have been waiting for, so the fact that we’re getting every small moment is meaningful.
Finally, his mom—her excitement and her acceptance. The fact that he’s even involving her and openly communicating with her through all of this is because of Lucy, and it makes the entire planning process lovelier because we can see Lucy’s impact on them. We can see her role in their lives beautifully. We know, without a shadow of a doubt, that when she says “yes,” it’s so much more than an engagement. It’s the type of forever they’ve both needed and wanted. It’s a change that will continue to ensure the best of them always comes to the surface, and I can’t wait to see how the following episodes continue to touch on the process.
