In the end, we’re getting what we want. Or at least I hope that’s the case. Deadline has officially confirmed that Luciane Buchanan will return in the fourth and final season of The Night Agent. While we have very little information on how she’ll return and for how many episodes, the decision hopefully means that we’ll get our Peter and Rose endgame.
Part of the reason countless fans were so upset by the show’s decision to write off Rose Larkin in Season 3 is that the inclusion of romance, and a leading character like her, made the series twice as compelling. There are countless spy dramas out there that involve the female protagonist dying for the sake of the male lead’s character growth (cough, Vesper Lynd, cough), and more often than not, it puts a bad taste in our mouths. It tells the audience that women are expendable in these genres, and it’s too frustrating to trust creators when it happens all too often.

At the same time, the show made a point to showcase how their love story was essentially like an anchor in the show, which then made the decision to write her off all the more frustrating. While we could understand the idea that Peter wanted to keep her safe, there could have been other ways to still incorporate her into the story and keep Luciane Buchanan in the show.
As a fan of the character, I’m grateful to know that she’s available to return and reprise her role, but I hope this trend also leads to more creators being honest with viewers in a manner where we can trust them. The Night Agent lost viewership in Season 3, and I can imagine that a lot of those people were fans of Rose and didn’t want to watch the series without her. Still, hopefully her return will be everything fans have hoped for.
