The build-up to Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been my favorite thing to happen in the MCU since Avengers: Infinity War. Yet, that also means that every little thing is making me anxious and uneasy because I need Peter Parker and all these characters to be happy in the end. We’ve had a few trailers and sneak peeks at this point, but maybe none more bittersweet than the latest to release, over a month before its release.
MJ back and swinging in Peter’s arms? The clear transformation to what might be The Other, a comic storyline. More of Frank Castle as The Punisher? Ned’s wall? My heart is in my throat in the best way because, despite the clear heartbreak present in this trailer, it also feels more hopeful than anything we’ve gotten before. (It also helps that press has begun, so seeing Tom Holland and Zendaya promote a movie together is evoking the exact joy a Spider-Man press tour should.)
The final lines of that trailer, coming from Aunt May’s voice, and Peter simultaneously voicing that he misses her? 911, the MCU is making me cry again. The general heartbreak in this story is so different from most of what we know in the MCU because things shouldn’t be this tough for kids. These should be the best years of their lives, and yet they know more heartache than they know joy.

And some of that haunting heartbreak is almost like a shadow in the trailer. There’s something especially sad about this one, and maybe it’s just the fact that we’re getting closer to the premiere, so all the feelings are amplified even more. Regardless, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is about to fix us all, I’m sure, and no matter how that happens, it’s going to be interesting to see what becomes of these characters.
