Christopher Nolan’s record-breaking summer blockbuster finally has a digital release date, and it can’t come soon enough. The Odyssey is one of the first movies in recent memory that’s gotten people out of the house and to a movie theater while they’ve also been conscious of what kind of a screening they’re choosing. Will it be IMAX? 70mm IMAX? Dolby? Prime? 4DX? Seriously, I don’t remember the last time people in my life who typically don’t watch movies in theaters have asked me what type of screening they should choose.
At the moment, the film is Nolan’s box office best, surpassing both Oppenheimer and The Dark Knight Rises. In its first weekend, it garnered $123.5 million in North America, and tickets for 70mm IMAX screenings were even sold out at ungodly hours like six in the morning and long past midnight. Currently, it holds the record for the highest-grossing R-rated movie with $1.352 billion. The Odyssey has not only gotten positive reviews from critics but from casual viewers, too, with the Rotten Tomatoes score standing at 94% for critics and 97% for audiences on August 31, 2026.
While I normally want a movie to release digitally so I can immediately rewatch it, it’s completely understandable why The Odyssey would be staying in theaters longer. It’s exactly how it should be. At the same time, while this absolutely is a movie everyone should go out of their way to watch in theaters, not every person can do that for various reasons.

The Odyssey is set to release digitally on November 17, with physical media also releasing at the same time. The movie isn’t available for pre-order yet, but in addition, we can also safely assume that it’ll be back in theaters later this year when award nominations begin trickling in.
That said, considering Oppenheimer went to streaming on Peacock, there’s a good chance that’ll be the case for The Odyssey, too, but we don’t have news on when that’ll be yet.
