Slow Horses Season 6, Episode 4, “Lost and Found” Spoilers Ahead
If last week’s “Resurrection” gave us Sid and River in a moment of brief (and significant) casual intimacy, then of course this week’s episode of Slow Horses would double down on the angst. Because a huge part of the appeal in their dynamic is how they consistently push each other’s buttons and, at times, legitimately fumble. There’s a lot to appreciate about this because the ugly parts of a dynamic—so long as they’re healthy like this and properly communicated—are a fundamental part of relationship growth.
The thing about River and Sid is that they know each other. Well and truly. Or, at least as best as two people in their position could. It’s impossible to trust people in this line of work, but the way they trust each other is on a deeper level that neither of them has fully processed the scope of. That’s why he can notice that her hands are shaking, and they have been since she’s returned. That’s why she can call him out when he doesn’t think and undermines her agency. The comfort and ease with which they can be fully transparent with each other is exactly why they’d be such a good match if they could just give in to everything that’s between them.
Sid Bandaging River’s Wound in Slow Horses Season 6, Episode 4 Gives Us Plenty to Deconstruct
In addition, there’s so much tenderness in the way Sid bandages River’s wound, which also results in the perfect moment to have this conversation. Because she’s rightfully irritated, and at the same time, he’s now hurt. Because of his own actions, yes, but also because she was shaking. So both their respective feelings are understandably all over the place. They’re on edge because of the assassins, but they’re also on edge because she’s still traumatized, and now he’s in pain. From a writing standpoint, the decision to slow everything down for this small scene and give them an honest conversation that brings everything to a boiling point is brilliant.
Because the writing is doing the most in every way to paint them as a pairing in this episode, and it works. The chemistry crackles to life every time they’re on-screen together, and it leaps to new heights in the most subtle manner, so getting them to this tipping point that’s both soft and sharp is excellent on so many levels. It’s excellent to get a taste of how they’d be in arguments because they’re both stubborn, but neither of them is inherently cruel in their stubbornness. They can fight back without being nasty, and showing that is substantial on a show like this.
There’s so much in this episode that rightfully unravels some of the truth behind what’s happening to all of them, and we also sadly lose Coe (more on this in another article), but Slow Horses Season 6, Episode 4, “Lost and Found,” continues to be a remarkable contributor to the romance area. Every little moment we get in this episode only solidifies how much better the show is now that Sid and River are reunited, and the tension in their argument simultaneously has a ripple effect on everything else.
What would’ve happened if River hadn’t stopped her in the bowling alley? Would Coe still be alive? Could they stand a chance against the assassins? Sure, three is bigger than two in this case, but again, these assassins are ruthless, and that’s a huge part of the season’s arc. We get some meaty conversations in this episode, and it’s simultaneously what contributes to making the season as balanced as it is. That distinct mix of action and quiet beats that force our characters to slow down heightens the emotions in every way, and I, for one, can’t get enough.
But what also stands out here are the performances. Always. The way Olivia Cooke and Jack Lowden don’t miss a single beat in evoking so much, even in the silence, never fails to floor me. There’s so much at play here, and all the small moments continue to give us worthy beats to showcase that these two want to be around each other, even as they’re arguing. Because it’s telling how she isn’t shaking now while she’s helping him. It’s telling how he can be so upfront when he knows he needs to get something off his chest. It’s telling how there are absolutely no reservations with each other, no matter the situation.
