When executed correctly to complete the answer required, formulas work and exist for a reason. We’d never argue against a mathematician or a scientist using what’s necessary to solve a problem, so why do we judge films when they do the same? Additionally, when regarding the romance genre, the formulaic structure drives readers to consistently return for the happy endings they know they will get. With this in mind, it’s not just the formula we should be judging but the execution: does it feature excellent leads with incredible chemistry, thoughtful writing, characterizations, and engaging directing? If so, then there’s a clear winner, and such is the case with Prime Video’s Upgraded, starring Camila Mendes and Archie Renaux, which seamlessly lands itself on the list of great romantic comedies.
Directed by Carlson Young with a stunning screenplay from Christine Lenig, Luke Spencer Roberts, and Justin Matthews, the film feels reminiscent of the good ol’ days when we had romantic comedies releasing in spades and taking us in the delicious grip we never want to be free from. It’s sharp, fun, and effortlessly romantic, with every beat more satisfying than the one before. It’s a shame the film immediately went to streaming because it belongs on the silver screen.

There’s plenty to appreciate about Prime Video’s Upgraded, and a considerable part comes from its glowing cast. From the first meet-cute to the final kiss, Camila Mendes and Archie Renaux are incredible scene partners, bringing to our screens a romance that’s easy to root for and care about. William and Ana meet in a first-class airport lounge, where she spills her Bloody Mary on his suede shoes, and then they serendipitously end up sitting next to each other on the plane. Meet cute? Check. Small disaster leading to great banter? Also, check. However, when William misunderstands Ana’s position and reasons for flying to London, she pushes the lie a little too far, landing in a bit of a pickle.
Anyone who’s read romance novels or watched a romantic comedy knows where the story is going. Yet, the screenplay and performances ensure that we’re invested despite the genre’s predictable nature. Still, that’s not all because, alongside Renaux and Mendes’ fantastic performances, we also have Lena Olin and Anthony Head who remain extraordinary and untouchable in their craft. Similarly, Marisa Tomei doesn’t miss a beat as perfectionist art director Claire. Thus, another reason why Prime Video’s Upgraded works is because it’s clear the cast had a blast while filming, which easily translates off-screen to the viewers. It’s the kind of romantic comedy you immediately want to rewatch the second the credits start to roll because there’s not a moment that’s dull or meh.

Further, Prime Video’s Upgraded isn’t just a romantic comedy, but it’s a story about two complex individuals trying to find their place in the world. While William has the privilege of money and his mother’s connections, Ana has very little to her name, working day and night for the recognition that seems like it might not come. As opposites, navigating through said challenges together makes the narrative more relatable, especially for those of us who can relate to Ana in grueling fields.
It’s a story about families and loyalty, and it’s a story about how relationships are meant to bring out the best in people. It features one of the hottest first kisses in recent romantic comedy history while taking on the third-act miscommunication trope with surprising nuances that keep characters in the driver’s seat. In short, it’s a whole lot of fun, proving that such films could always shimmer and remain memorable when done precisely. Bursting with a mega-delightful cast, thoughtful storytelling, intricate pacing, and solid directing, Prime Video’s Upgraded is without question one of the best romantic comedies of the year.
Upgraded is now streaming exclusively on Prime Video.
