Ghosts 3×05 “The Silent Partner” Spoilers Ahead
Written by Kira Kalush and directed by Trent O’Donnell, Ghosts Season 3, Episode 5, “The Silent Partner,” is yet another doozy that provides all the emotional beats to keep us coming back for more. Carol Martino is officially a ghost at Woodstone Mansion, but for how long remains a question the series still has time to answer.
The narrative hooks impressively split the attention from Pete and Carol’s reunion with Jay’s restaurant issues and the need for an investor. In turn, it effortlessly continues to highlight that the show is all about a found family and what that ultimately means in the long run.
Ghosts 3×05 “The Silent Partner” – Jay and Isaac Meet in the Middle
As hilarious as it is that Jay can’t see the ghosts, it’s also exceedingly true that it can be deeply frustrating for him. So, while it’s easy to understand why Isaac is upset by Jay’s comments regarding his money, it’s easier to register where Jay is coming from. He believes Sam fully; there’s no doubt about that, but of course, to him, there’s still a bridge built between him and the ghosts. He cares about them tremendously, yes, but it’s also simpler for him to put up boundaries, especially where B&B/restaurant matters are concerned.
Still, in true Ghosts fashion, he comes around after reading Isaac’s book and understanding why it matters that the Revolutionary War veteran has a place to belong. “The Silent Partner” then becomes an actualized vision that’s present in the sense of acknowledgment, which is why it’s perfect that Jay reserves a table for the ghosts and the ghosts alone to show them that they are indeed real to him. Ghosts 3×05 thus gorgeously underscores the weight of silence, noting how loud it can be when there’s respect and compassion. It’s another way of authenticating why the silent treatment can be so deafening, and it does so in a wholesome manner that works best for this show.
Pete Martino Remains an Absolute Gem
In a perfect world, all the ghosts would be (intimately) consorting and giving us the 80s romantic comedy we’re constantly dreaming of. That only leaves Sas, so we need to find him someone like the car ghost immediately. However, if nothing else, Ghosts 3×05 “The Silent Partner” proves that Pete Martino is too good for this world, and he’s especially too good for Carol. It’s also riveting that the series doesn’t waste too much time dragging on the truth and instead allows him to fully confront her, so their time spent together isn’t too awkward and uncomfortable.
The tiny bits of fake dating we get between Pete and Alberta (and Nancy) are everything. Top it off with the “he’s all that” brief makeover moment at the very end, and this ship is finally on its way toward sailing at some point. (Right? Right? I need it.) It remains remarkably telling how sincere Pete chooses to be even when all the odds are consistently stacked against him. Like Isaac, he’s trying. He’s pushing forward—he’s endeavoring to make the afterlife significantly better than when he was alive. It’ll be interesting to see how much Carol’s presence pushes him and whether that could lead to further character development, but it’s fascinating, no less that, at the end of the day, his integrity matters more than anything else.
Ghosts 3×05 “The Silent Partner” is an excellent example of what makes the show deeply wholesome and crudely hilarious at the same time. We have two massive fights, Sas and Hetty making wildly questionable decisions about what they’d like to taste, and new developments that tell us there’s still so much story to unravel in front of us. Well-acted, hilariously written, and acutely directed, it’s another big win for sitcoms.
