Ghosts 3×07 “The Polterguest” Spoilers Ahead
Ghosts Season 3, Episode 7, “The Polterguest,” is a mixed bag of sorts, but it’s one that surprisingly works in everything it attempts to accomplish. Written by Akilah Green and directed by Jude Weng, it slowly pushes the characters toward making decisions for themselves that’ll benefit them in the long run while simultaneously emphasizing the importance of connecting with others in a way that matters.
The thing that consistently performs well on Ghosts is how dramatized everything can be when it comes to revelations. It doesn’t matter how many boundaries we’re pushing because, somehow, arcs lock into place in an admirably hilarious fashion. Fans of the series might never be able to hear the word “clicking” without automatically thinking of 50 Cent’s “Candy Shop” at the same time. I fear they’re both synonymous now. Still, the episode does an interesting job of finding balance while essentially noting why it’s so crucial when it comes to relationships succeeding.
Lamorne Morris and Danielle Pinnock Are the Ultimate Comedic Duo in Ghosts 3×07 “The Polterguest”
It’s fitting that New Girl alum Lamorne Morris would get the episode’s title. He deserves as much, and the rapport with Danielle Pinnock is wildly hilarious throughout. More than anything, what this episode teaches us about Alberta and how she functions in a relationship is fascinating. It starts to make complete sense why being in a future relationship with Pete could be a challenge if they don’t evolve into people (spirits?) who could compromise for one another. No matter how attracted she is to Saul, Alberta pulls away the moment he starts getting clingy, telling Sam that she’s okay with Jay taking him back to the host he was initially attached to. The exciting romance is thus short-lived, but not before the ghosts get to have a little fun.
Fun…in the most awkward sense of the word because Saul is attached to Jay, who’s obviously going to sleep next to Sam, who can see and hear everything. In a nutshell, Ghosts 3×07 “The Polterguest” uses Alberta and Saul’s budding relationship to showcase how moments apart can be a good thing. There are people in the world who want to be joined at the hip, but there are others who’d prefer time elsewhere before coming back together. Unfortunately, given Saul’s situation, there’s no form of compromise they can find here. And well, he isn’t Pete. Isn’t that what we’re all sort of rooting for?
Bachelor Parties, Lap Dances, and Dinosaurs
Isaac’s continuous obsession with dinosaurs is one of the most hilarious details on the show because anyone with a tendency to fixate on something is going to do it for a long, long time. Thus, none of us, Nigel included, should expect him to get over it anytime soon. Brandon Scott Jones might inarguably be the funniest actor on the show, but everything we get with Isaac in Ghosts 3×07 “The Polterguest” might be peak comedy. The choice to have him scream about how he loves lap dances and initially proposing that they’re definitely, 100% going to walk down the aisle to the Jurassic Park theme makes for some top-notch moments.
Further, as the episode does with Saul and Alberta, it uses Isaac and Nigel’s time apart to showcase that where the men are now is a healthy place to be. Relationships are about wants and needs that go beyond what happens behind closed doors. Today, the two men trust each other in a way they hadn’t yet before, so much so that even though Isaac loved the lap dance, we know he adores Nigel a thousand times more. These two click—emphasis on the click— in impenetrable ways, revealing the significance of trust in their relationship.
With couples getting their due, Ghosts 3×07 “The Polterguest” doesn’t miss a single beat in underscoring how important communication truly is. It does the same with Jay and Sam consistently, but seeing it with the ghosts makes for an episode that will be one of the most memorable ones in the season.
Stray Thoughts
- Jay is, and will forever be, the absolute best. Every word out of his mouth this week made me laugh out loud so many times that I had to pause to catch my breath. “Just because they say it doesn’t mean you have to?” “I don’t know how long I have to keep doing this.” “Are they done talking? Can I get a magazine?” What an absolute icon.
- No, but seriously, I’m never getting over Isaac’s obsession with dinosaurs.
- Pete repeatedly telling the same joke? I adore him. I also adore the fact that this episode didn’t feature Carol because a break was necessary after last week.
- Sucked off. Jerked off to another host. What’s NEXT?!
- I also cackled about “How’s my hat?” “Still small and ugly.”
- If I say “I miss Hetty and Trevor” enough times do we think I can manifest another scene with them sneaking off together? I’m not sure, but I’m going to do it anyway.
