It’s official. A Red, White and Royal Blue sequel is in the works. Director Matthew Lopez and author Casey McQuiston announced the news at a special Los Angeles screening on May 9, 2024, surrounded by the film’s leads, Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine, alongside Uma Thurman and a bustling crowd of viewers.
While we have very little information about the development and how the story will pan out, as fans of First Son Alex Claremont-Diaz and Prince Henry Fox, we have a few hopes for what we could potentially see. The original film is an unmistakable triumph as a romance, and the sequel can give viewers even more. It already is. If Netflix gives us trilogies for some of the most mundane movies, viewers deserve more of this gem. (Yes, this is us manifesting a trilogy.)
Red, White and Royal Blue Sequel Should (Hopefully) Feature an Engagement
The best thing that can come from this sequel is an engagement, followed by another film that focuses entirely on the wedding. If that’s asking for too much, then we’ll simply take all the festivities here. We’ve already gone through plenty of drama, with the two of them finding their way back to one another in the first film, so the content we get in the second should hopefully be lighter. We want to see them evolve as a couple more, maybe argue about who snores louder, and have plenty of wholesome dates followed by quiet moments of vulnerability, too.
The chemistry between Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine is too good not to dive deeper into showcasing how the characters continue growing together. How are the people reacting in England? How is re-election going? Maybe there’s a bit of distance, but they’re going to navigate through it all like adults because that’s what they are. A bit of miscommunication here and there, sure, it’s part of writing, I get it, but we should hopefully spend more time basking in their joy than their struggles. No third-party involvement in any way, please, and thanks.
At the end of the day, both Henry and Alex are adults, which essentially means that big decisions with some sort of commitment should be the thing we focus on. Maybe they’re buying a house together; maybe it’s staying in Alex’s childhood home for a while. The smaller moments often translate to big, life-changing ones, and having the opportunity to see all that through their points of view would be incredible.
More than anything, the fact that we’re even getting a Red, White and Royal Blue sequel is a big deal. As long as there’s no cheating involved and we still see Henry and Alex happy, we’ll take whatever storyline the writers want to give us. This is a gorgeous win for the LGBTQ+ community on our screens and for standalone romance novels. It signals to the world that people want to see joyful stories. People want the chance to watch minorities thrive and believe in the prospect that they could have that same joy someday. So, whatever happens, sign us up. We’re thrilled to get our boys back.
