If Prime Video’s The Idea of You proves anything, it’s that the world could always use more of Anne Hathaway. But, and perhaps more importantly, the world could use more romances with men and women in their forties. Thus, now is the perfect time to show the world we’re ready for the stories that come after the happily ever after, which is especially the case for The Princess Diaries 3.

While there’s very little we know about the film and what it could hold for our favorite monarch, Anne Hathaway confirmed to V Magazine that it’s still in motion and things are looking good. There are a myriad of ways the story can go, but the hope that it’ll feature a leading princess who’s no longer a teenager or a young woman might just be the most exciting part of the new release.

One of the more riveting things about film and television romances is that the majority of stories often center younger characters. There’s tremendous appeal there, too, but what about the people who are a little older? There’s a bonkers discourse out there, especially after The Idea of You, that people are questioning how on earth Hathaway can be so hot. Contrary to popular internet belief, people do not shrivel up after they turn thirty.
Additionally, The Fall Guy furthermore gives us an exhilarating, gorgeously compelling relationship featuring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, two actors who are also in their early forties. And if the excitement surrounding that film proves anything, it’s that people are ready for the stories outside of what Hollywood loves to tell. Plus, Anne Hathaway and Chris Pine? It’s what we deserve.

There’s a ton of ageism in Hollywood, which is especially harsh and geared toward women and how they are treated in media after a certain age. As much as we discuss the female gaze in films and TV shows these days, there’s a veil placed upon aging women that almost diminishes their light instead of focusing on how effortlessly they shine. The Idea of You and The Fall Guy do it exceptionally well by placing women front and center. The Princess Diaries 3 would also do this seamlessly because Mia has been a beloved character since the moment she told Dame Julia Andrews to shut up in the original film. We’ve adored her since then, and we adore her now. Plus, Julia Andrews!? Hello?! Need I say more?

At the same time, it’d be fascinating to know that no matter how old we get, we’re still searching for ways to grow and evolve. We all thought we’d have it together in our thirties, but actually, ninety percent of us are almost always on the struggle bus. The exploration of how Mia Thermopolis is ruling a kingdom would not only make for a great film, but it’d be the classic rom-com with immense joy we’d need. The time that’s passed would make our nostalgia stronger and more intense. And you know what? We just need Anne Hathaway and Chris Pine to come save us, really. That’s what’s severely missing from the world of romance. It’d heal us. I know it would.
