One of the reasons Hallmark’s When Calls the Heart is so easy to adore isn’t solely because of the romance but rather the friendships between women. There’s rarely any catty drama or pitting women against each other. At the height of some of the most intense episodes, we often get beautiful moments that exhibit strong friendships that my eternal queen and coiner of the term “ovaries before brovaries,” Leslie Knope, would be proud of. This is especially true for Elizabeth and Rosemary, who’d do anything for each other, but one scene in particular never fails to be a comforting tear-jerker.
In Season 10, Episode 11, “Long Time Running,” Rosemary knocks on Elizabeth’s door because she notices her light is on. While looking at old photos, Elizabeth confesses that she’s having doubts about the wedding and opens up about all the fears she’s held onto while deciding between Nathan Grant and Lucas Bouchard. The women talk things through, and then a tearful Elizabeth says to Rosemary, “I really like knowing that you could see my light on.”
Many people aren’t fortunate enough to live right next door to their best friend and platonic soulmate. If we were, we’d likely feel the same pain and anguish about potentially moving away. It’s a dream many of us think about when we’re young and envisioning our futures, but life often takes us in different directions. Most of us actually live too far away from our closest friends. However, because When Calls the Heart is a drama that centers around a small town, such dreams are made possible, and they’re worth preserving, too.
It makes perfect sense that neither Elizabeth nor Rosemary would ever want to move because this small convenience is monumental in shaping their best and worst moments. It’s deeply comforting to know that they have someone close by who doesn’t need to be told to come around—they simply know. And as beautiful as romantic relationships are, sometimes you need your girlfriends. It’s like the Golden Girls having heart-to-hearts with cheesecake in their kitchen. When the light is on late at night, it’s a sign only those closest can read.
Elizabeth and Rosemary’s friendship is the most surprising element within the show because when the two women meet, it’s impossible to predict that this is where they’ll end up. They’re even more kindred than Elizabeth and Abigail were because they’ve experienced so much together that they speak a whole other language. It’s a reminder that even a temporary move with Lucas would’ve been so difficult for Elizabeth because, on the nights when he worked late, no one would know that she needed someone if her light was on.

When Calls the Heart features countless wholesome moments like this, but Erin Krakow and Pascale Hutton deliver their scenes with so much heart that it floors me. Some people in this world have such an evocative crying face that it could trigger the person in front of them to lose it, too, and Krakow is one of them. When Elizabeth cries, you cry alongside her, and it’s how she tries so hard not to break in this moment that makes the scene feel real and honest. Because here, we know that she gets what a tremendous loss this would be for Elizabeth, so she brings her A game with so much sincerity that it makes the scene even more special. The same can be said for Hutton, who matches Krakow’s vulnerability with her own, giving us a moment that’s promising and profound in every way.
