Happy’s Place Season 1, Episode 4 Review: ‘Fish Fry Monday’

Gabby, Bobbie, and Isabella in Happy's Place Season 1, Episode 4.

In another hilariously heartfelt episode that allows us to get to know our favorite new characters, “Fish Fry Monday” dives deep into the family matters at Happy’s Place. It continues to balance humor with necessary emotional stakes that give each character the space to be snarky and vulnerable, making it yet another win.

Early in the episode, viewers learn that Emmett and Bobbie’s father, Happy, used to go fishing together on Sundays and return to cook the fish the next day. It’s a hit for everyone, so when he proposes they bring the tradition back, he also insists that Bobbie accompany him. Back at the tavern, Isabella asks Gabby to teach her everything she knows about bartending, which turns into a whole argument.

When a storm hits and traps Emmett and Bobbie inside the cabin as opposed to where they can catch actual fish, Bobbie confronts him about why he didn’t attend Happy’s funeral. This bit of news to the audience cleverly allows us to get to know Emmett more as it forces him to be vulnerable with Bobbie. He tells her that he came to this very cabin instead, played Willie Nelson, and drank some of the beers loaded in the fridge. That’s how he honored his friend, and Rex Linn is so sincere in his delivery that it broke my heart a bit.

It’s an intriguing reminder of the fact that grief doesn’t always look the same, and people have different ways of honoring those they love. It’s also perfectly in character for Emmett to do this and, more so, to remind Bobbie that this whole fishing trip is meant to be a reprieve all along.

Everyone deserves the chance to live outside of work, and this was how Happy got his time off to do so. While drinking together and forced to spend time away from the tavern without reception, Bobbie realizes the importance of rest, making it a great little lesson veiled in hilarious circumstances. It also makes it even easier to continue shipping Bobbie and Emmett because the chemistry is sizzling in their forced proximity. There’s no denying that the characters bring out the best in each other, even while they grumble through almost everything they do. Plus, isn’t that how the best romantic relationships start?! In my book, they are.

Back at the tavern, Happy’s Place Season 1, Episode 4, “Fish Fry Monday,” tests Gabby and Isabella’s generally easy rapport by bringing out a new side of Gabby to the audience. In the same way that Emmett gets vulnerable, we have the chance to see all the reasons Gabby loves bartending and, simultaneously, why it upsets her that Isabella tries to listen to the internet as opposed to taking her advice. Melissa Peterman continues to do an incredible job of hiding some of Gabby’s insecurities through her eccentrically loud nature, so when Isabella does her own thing, it’s natural to see why it upsets Gabby.

Steve then separates the women from arguing in front of all the guests, and they get the chance to voice their sides, allowing the other person to see a new perspective. Isabella understands completely, but most of the broader understanding comes from seeing how Gabby handles unwanted harassment. It’s at that moment where it’s gorgeously obvious that every single person working at Happy’s Place has each other’s back even while they argue. It proves Emmett’s point back at the cabin, too, signaling to the viewers that every new thing that keeps happening is indeed for the good of all these characters. They’re going to keep looking out for each other, every single one of them, just like we saw in last week’s “Don’t Sweat It.

Sitcoms continue to be as beloved as they are because viewers want to see characters having each other’s back. We want to know that the fictional people we care about and their relationships are all going to be okay, and Happy’s Place Season 1, Episode 4, “Fish Fry Monday,” affectionately knocks us over the head with the proof that it is. (See Bobbie shoving an inanimate fish in Emmett’s face.) That’s the show to the audience, and I welcome it.

Stray Thoughts

  • Gabby’s hair this week is A+.
  • A “cocktologist” took me out.
  • The way I screamed, THERE’S A STORM!
