Every time we recommend a TV series nowadays, we have to preface it with the disclaimer that we know it’s risky for viewers to invest without guaranteed renewals. That said, Rivals on Disney+ is indeed worth the commitment. It feels new and familiar at the same time while it keeps us on our toes in the most surprisingly comforting way.
Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Dame Jilly Cooper, it’s the type of period piece we’ve been desperately waiting for, and if it continues with the astute writing from Season 1, it has the potential to become an all-time favorite series in the future. There’s a clear vision and thoughtful execution that delivers some of the best TV moments of the year, and that alone is a worthy reason to start watching.
1. Rivals Is Bursting With Complex Characters
If you miss the chaos and wreckage of HBO’s Succession, then look no further than Rivals on Disney+. At some point in the series, every character will piss you off, but you’ll also have someone to back and root for. In a time period where people are at the height of tremendous changes, it’s natural that everyone would be at each other’s throats. Yet, part of the appeal of these characters is how grounded they feel, even though their circumstances are vastly different than what the average human experiences.
The mess is outright frustrating at times, but with this much ugliness, the show paves plenty of room for satisfying character development. Where a majority of the characters start and where they end up in the finale are in such significantly different positions that the reactions are guaranteed to be wholly captivating. It’s the best kind of development if you ask me, and it’s one I can’t stop thinking about.
2. Age Gap Romance – Hear Me Out
Age-gap romances can be tricky, but Rivals on Disney+ nails every beat of its execution with careful storytelling to showcase a healthy representation. Much of the satisfaction is due to the exemplary character development, and at the same time, it acts as a paradigm of what it means for the person who’s always taking care of others to have someone steadfastly standing in their corner.

The tension between Rupert Campbell-Black (Alex Hassell) and Agatha “Taggie” O’Hara (Bella Maclean) is white hot at times and so achingly tender that it’s sure to be on every Best of 2024 relationships list. We get so much in the eight episodes that cement how they could be good for each other and why they’d work despite the odds stacked against them. From their first interaction to the last, there’s undoubtedly something special sparking on screen.
3. Aidan Turner
Aidan Turner and his mustache deserve the world. I have no coherent thought in my head while I type this, so if you’re hoping for something profound, that’s not happening. All you need to know is that this is one of Turner’s best roles, and his character is an absolute treasure. So is his mustache.
Okay, no but seriously. Aidan Turner’s role might be the most surprising because while most of the online discourse focuses on romance, we should also be talking about his incredible character journey and remarkable performances.
4. British Countryside Setting
Rivals on Disney+ takes place at the Cotswolds, and while filmed in various locations, the British countryside is always a comforting setting. It makes the show utterly gorgeous and so lovely to watch. Things get messy and wild, but damn if they look good while everything happens. If you’re looking for an escape, given everything occurring in other parts of the world, then look no further.
5. Excellent Storytelling
Most importantly, Rivals on Disney+ genuinely features excellent and well-developed storytelling. It certainly helps that the series is based on quality source material, and it’s every bit of the kind of drama that’s sharp, engaging, and easy to invest in. The pacing is incredible, and each story that fills the space is intentional.
It also helps that the series is brimming and led by exceptional performers, like the incomparable David Tennant. Tennant is one of the greatest actors of our time, and everything he brings to our screens here is nothing short of incredible. The series features countless familiar faces, and there’s no denying that their performances are a large part of the show’s appeal to layer the fantastic narratives.
All eight episodes of Rivals are now streaming on Disney+ or Hulu.
