When Calls the Heart Season 12, Episode 2, “You Get What You Give” Spoilers Ahead
When Calls the Heart goes from zero to ten in “You Get What You Give,” and then backpedals a bit to a more grounded place where stories will hopefully unravel at a slower, more grounded pace. It’s still the second episode in a twelve-episode season, so there’s plenty we’re going to go back and forth on, yet it’s also easy to feel settled in much of the new normal.
Mike and Mei Sue are back from their disastrous honeymoon to further issues in their apartment; the comic book rise is distracting the kiddos; a new face hinders Lucas’ plan with the national park; new Mountie trainee Oliver makes some progress; Nathan and Elizabeth are cuter than ever, but most importantly, our girl Rosemary puts on—and nails—her first radio show.
When Calls the Heart Season 12, Episode 2 Is About Examining All Angles
In many ways, everything starts with an angle and then expands further and further until we find the right one. It’s essentially what journalism is, and the more the series explores this concept through Rosemary, the stronger it gets. Does kicking off the radio show happen a bit too quickly in a matter that’s a bit unrealistic? Absolutely. But the struggle we watch her go through as she tries to find a topic to discuss is the most god-honest truth about creating in any form. Thankfully, When Calls the Heart follows up with the comic book hype that “The Mountie Way” introduced. With this, it ties multiple narratives together and makes a clear point about how reading is reading, no matter how it’s done.
Simultaneously, it allows Elizabeth to give the kids the type of lesson that underscores what it’s like to find their thing, an issue that’s especially important to Allie as she’s surrounded by older friends who’ll be off to college soon. It’d be more effective if it didn’t happen so quickly because that’s rarely the case in the real world, yet TV, I suppose. Still, this is only the start, so there’s something to admire about that detail.
Ultimately, if there’s one character who’s successfully going to architect whatever she puts her mind to, it’s Rosemary Coulter. In this regard, it makes perfect sense that the segment goes well despite her nerves and apprehension leading toward it. And, of course, it helps to have an entire town that’s rooting for you because even while it’s nerve-wracking, she knows that everyone sitting in that room is on her side.
Elsewhere, When Calls the Heart Season 12, Episode 2, “You Get What You Give,” thankfully showcases that things at the capital are taking time. Sure, perhaps a radio show can be sped up, but a national park can’t, and with Edwin Mitchel’s return and the introduction of Miranda MacDougall’s Edie Martell, Lucas and Lee have a myriad of problems on their hands. (I need Lucas to actually catch a break for five seconds.) Still, the hindrance poses an intriguing argument of what’s political and what’s for the good of the people. Yes, Lucas is trying to win the election, but at the same time, he cares about the people his creations will impact. Because of this, it isn’t shocking that he takes Edie’s suggestions into thorough consideration.
It also isn’t shocking that Lee would be frustrated by the new option, considering the fact that he left his wife and daughter at home for this promise. It also doesn’t help that he doesn’t trust Edwin, so working with him is an added tick on his shoulder. The accusatory statements toward Lucas aren’t at all necessary, but given the sensitive nature of things, it’s entirely in character and something that I imagine will come back around.
After all, even when he gets to Rosemary, Lee doesn’t even want to talk about what happened; he just wants his wife. Few things showcase a couple’s reverential need for one another the way that a hug does and thank God When Calls the Heart isn’t stingy with them. When necessary, the show delivers, and it’s always satisfying.
The smaller narratives in When Calls the Heart Season 12, Episode 2, “You Get What You Give,” are also thematically on point as the older students help out Henry and Pastor Joseph with the hazelnuts for comic book money while the first newlywed quarrel with Mike and Mei Sue leads to better communication.
In more ways than one, if the episode is about finding one’s own unique thing, Oliver succeeds here, too as his organizational skills prove to be very useful for Nathan. And speaking of Nathan, dare I say, there’s a lot of strength in a man who’s willing to allow his girl to be the reason he makes a breakthrough. He and Lee are so great at this, which always makes the romance easy to root for. It’s a solid episode overall, though I would’ve preferred a bit more of Nathan and Elizabeth. Perhaps next week will do the trick.
Stray Thoughts
- I love Allie and Angela’s friendship so much.
- I can’t deal with Elizabeth and Nathan’s wholesome little flirting. Like, they’re constantly looking at each other like they put stars in the sky, and I’m the one who’s blushing. The whole “You look happy, too?” It’s because he’s down bad, crying at the office over you. The small background kiss at her house? The way they’re consistently grinning from ear every single time they see each other. The way they sit beside each other at dinner? Oh, I’m losing it.
- “What about a tab?” / “You’re kids.” made me cackle.
- Lucas’ hair this week is A+
- I think everyone needs a Lee in their lives.
- Okay, but why do I already ship Lucas and Edie?!
- Henry 🥹 he’s come so far and it never fails to make my heart happy.
- I could think of a handful of greedy people who need to be reminded of Deuteronomy 24:19.
- “The Queen of our hearts” banner about Rosemary is so precious.
- Comic books aren’t a plague, babe.
- This window debacle is so silly.
- I really love Henry and Pastor Joseph!
- The bell made me cackle.
- Yes, Faith—defend reading, no matter how it’s done.
- Also Pastor Joseph.
- This fight between Lucas and Lee makes so much sense, but it still sucks to watch.
- A standing ovation for my girl!!
- I love that Oliver is invited to dinner at Elizabeth’s!
- Rosemary and Lee remain the cutest!
