It’s no surprise that I feel like most Kate and Anthony scenes in Bridgerton are missing some crucial details. I’ve never made it a secret that I firmly believe Jonathan Bailey and Simone Ashley are the ones who consistently go the extra mile to fill the spaces of unspoken words with important emotional beats to show the audience how their relationship has made the characters better and stronger.
So, it’s taken me a while to write about this scene because I kept pushing it back, believing it’s one that deserves to be fleshed out more with conversations about their past. However, what recently hit me is that the reason it’s still one of my favorite scenes is because the actors continue to show us that, if nothing else, the characters give each other the safe space to be vulnerable and fully themselves. As heartbreaking as it is that we don’t actually see their baby on screen, the quiet moments of Anthony kissing her belly are what we need to understand how deeply happy the two of them are together.
As the eldest daughter, when Kate’s father died and Mary grieved, she took it upon herself to do everything she could to take care of Edwina and Mary. And when Anthony’s dad died, taking care of his mother and seven siblings was all on him. Numbers sadly matter here—an eighteen-year-old responsible for a title, his mother, and seven siblings? That’s too much for an adult to take on, let alone someone whose frontal lobe isn’t fully developed while he’s simultaneously grieving.
And while Anthony’s never been perfect, he’s never had someone take care of him. Even when he’s fooling around in Season 1, there’s something to be said about how he’s holding Sienna and not the other way around. Yet, what’s so riveting about this particular Anthony and Kate scene in Bridgerton Season 3, Episode 5, “Tick Tock,” is that they’re holding each other. For the first time in both their lives, they’re not only genuinely happy, but their commitment to each other is so equally distributed that it makes my heart squeeze every time I think about how free they are to be this loved.

There’s also something to be said about how we often see women being held like this, but it’s seldom men. And we love to joke about what a simp Anthony is, but it’s also just deeply lovely to see the man who’s always held others have someone who’d never let go of him. The safe space that their love holds is a sacred thing of beauty that wraps around both of them in a completely healing manner, making every moment they share that much more memorable. This is why, even though the dialogue tells us very little, their performances make the scenes glisten still.
Kate and Anthony aren’t characters who get moments of levity often. They’re always looking out for others, and even when they aren’t actively protecting people, they’re lying awake at night, questioning themselves. They question their abilities, their strengths, and their weaknesses. That’s why their marriage works as beautifully as it does because together, they share the burdens, the light, and the darkness. Their return home should’ve been about telling everyone the news, but instead, there’s more news for them to take on. (Which isn’t a bad thing!) But it’s this idea that they’re rarely allowed just to be still, vulnerable, and loved without their duties consistently pulling them in various directions.
We can even maybe debate that wanting to keep things a secret is Kate’s way of holding on for a little while longer despite having other things to worry about. There’s much to be said about how comfortable they are around each other, how easy this moment feels, and how profoundly soft it is. It showcases that they’re a team in every way where it matters and how the two people who’ve always taken care of others now have someone who’ll hold them through everything.
