School Spirits Season 2, Episode 5, “Ghost Who’s Coming to Dinner” Spoilers Ahead
School Spirits‘ “Ghost Who’s Coming to Dinner” is another well-balanced chapter that explores the show’s heart and mystery. It directly answers a question that last week’s final few moments regarding Mr. Martin revealed, and it also gives us lovely beats of development where romance is concerned for the characters.
Here at Lady Geeks, we’re almost always looking for romance with the fiction we consume, and we certainly get some in the show. Yet, this episode deep dives (pun intended) to propose that perhaps the answers we’re looking for aren’t the ones we were expecting to find. Are these two things connected, or am I simply trying to connect dots that aren’t there? The answer might be something we get next week, in the finale, or at the very end of the show. Who knows.Â
What Happened to Mr. Martin and Whose Body Did He Jump Into?
Last week’s “A Walk-in to Remember” showed us that Mr. Martin basically followed in Janet’s footsteps and took up residence in a living person’s body. School Spirits Season 2, Episode 5, “Ghost Who’s Coming to Dinner,” reveals that the very body that’s now hijacked by an unpredictable ghost is Mr. Anderson’s. Teachers in School Spirits can’t exactly be trusted, but it certainly feels like Mr. Anderson is one of the more reliable ones. If nothing else, his intentions aren’t as malicious, so it’s fascinating how he’s now among the dead while the teacher we can’t trust is outside in the real world.
This begs another question, then. Do Rhonda and Janet have a lot more in common with how they died? What exactly was Mr. Martin’s deal, and how much damage did he truly do to Janet? What more will he do to Maddie’s body while he actively tries to harm Janet and, by extension, Mr. Anderson’s reputation?
Elsewhere Love Blooms
Maddie and Wally aren’t the only ones diving deep into love, but Charley’s getting a second chance, too. There’s also a bit of light with Quinn and Rhonda that’s working for me, and all of it feels like a balm in a show that’s mostly heartbreaking in countless areas. Interestingly, while with Wally, Maddie also notes how this is the first time she isn’t determined to get out, but she’s trying to stay in the moment, signaling that maybe this is something we could actually see. How the human world and the spirit realm can bleed together and whether we’ll actually get happy endings for the relationships set up in Season 1 is one of the things that’s going to be so intriguing to learn more about.
Still, what’s also riveting is that this episode explores most of its arcs in pairs, and whether that’s meant to tell us something or not, only time will tell. (I’m not one for theorizing, but…the dots, are we connecting them?) Plus, the whole ghostly forum You Got Mail thing we’re seeing with Nicole and Xavier? Once again, I have questions. Still, the scenes we do get are so hopeful that it would be unfortunate if they didn’t end well.
