When Calls the Heart Season 12, Episode 7 Review: ‘Dance the Night Away’

Nathan and Elizabeth go undercover in a 20s party in WCTH Season 12 Episode 7.

When Calls the Heart’s latest episode is about putting on a show and how doing so believably can lead to either applause or rotten tomatoes thrown onto the stage. Metaphorically speaking, of course. In more ways than one, “Dance the Night Away” is so breezy that I can’t help but wonder if we’re getting off easily. The other shoe has to drop at some point, and I’m both excited and nervous to see it.

Nathan and Elizabeth find themselves in an unexpected conundrum when a movie date leads to perps from last week’s rouse recognizing Nathan out on the street; Rosemary begins casting for her own production of The Importance of Being Earnest; Allie and Oliver make another breakthrough, while elsewhere, Edie and Lucas find themselves on opposite sides. Again.

Nathan and Elizabeth have been through quite a bit to get to the happy bubble they’re now living in, but because this is a TV show where drama is necessary, I can’t help but find myself concerned. So much of this episode goes swimmingly while they convince Toddy and his wife, Trudy, that they’re Dan and Diane, but how far is too far? Knowing When Calls the Heart, something big is coming in the last few episodes to crank up the angst, so it’s clear that this is likely the narrative writers might pull from.

Still, as an avid romance reader and author, I’ll take all the tropes that go into an undercover situation, and the two of them in this week’s episode reminded me so much of both “Hollywoodland” and the Bonnie and Clyde arc in Timeless. (IYKYK.) Scenes like the two of them getting their story crossed end up being raw and believable the moment Nathan uses a real example by bringing Allie into the picture. And the fact that so much of it comes full circle with her role in their relationship is a significant detail to acknowledge. Sure, Nathan was attracted to Elizabeth from the very beginning because who wouldn’t be, but it’s how she treated Allie that showed him her heart. It’s how she gave Allie a home and a place to belong where Nathan’s heart began gravitating toward her, understanding with full certainty that she’s the type of woman worthy of being loved because of how deeply she loves.

Their relationship isn’t just about the two of them, but it’s about Allie and little Jack, too. It’s about authenticating the idea that home isn’t a place — it’s the people, and Allie found a home in Hope Valley because of Elizabeth. And the sincerity in Kevin McGarry’s performance as he covertly tells this story is what makes the truth impossible not to believe in because no part of it is part of the game. Yes, they’re pretending to be a married couple, and yes, they’re intersecting stories about their fake first moments, but the truth flashes in the real love they have for each other.

It’s clear that McGarry and Erin Krakow had a blast filming their scenes in When Calls the Heart Season 12, Episode 7, “Dance the Night Away,” because every time they take up the frame, there’s unparalleled joy for both Nathan and Elizabeth. They needed the getaway, but it’s also another important piece of their puzzle to see how great they are as a pair when things don’t always go according to plan. It’s proof of the fact that in every situation, they’ll always look out for each other first.

Opposite Sides, Compelling Angles

Speaking of pairs, it continues to be thoroughly fascinating to see Chris McNally and Miranda MacDougall play off one another as Lucas and Edie, respectively. The parallels we get between the two of them and other pairs who are together are gripping to showcase how the two of them are equals, yet they challenge each other in ways that could be incredibly beneficial if they start a relationship.

Lucas has always needed someone who could challenge him while simultaneously holding her own before him. In many ways, Edie is already that person and not because she’s clearly hiding something that’s bigger. (Could it be connected to the coins?) Ultimately, the banter they have while playing cards and the moment of levity we got between them in “Dancing Teens” aren’t accidental. Instead, they illuminate the slow but compelling ways they can open up to each other.

The late hour in this episode contrasting the daylight of finding cattle together effectively plays on this idea of opposites fitting together seamlessly, and it also touches on this idea of how they’re not at all different. Day and night, night and day go hand in hand, and if we’re meant to root for them as a pair, it can be so enticing to see how they’ll continue to push past the barricades they both hide behind. Plus, the fact that he already knows her tells is a riveting sign to reveal how he’s paying attention. How much he’s aware of and how interested he already is.

Yet, more than anything, it’s the way Lucas listens to Allie and Oliver that continues to impress me. He’s undoubtedly slowly ripping at the seams because that’s what happens to politicians who want to impress everyone around them, but it continues to make his arc that much more complex. Kid or adult, Lucas cares about making a difference, so the fact that he sees the work Allie and Oliver are putting in is one of the many ways I hope he inspires Edie’s decisions. She’s clearly open to something, so it’s just a matter of finding the hurdle she’s guarding to fully crack this situation.

The Importance of Being Earnest

The Importance of Being Earnest is one of my favorite productions, so I adore the fact that Rosemary is putting on the play, yet I still don’t find myself intrigued by the presence of this heiress. There’s clearly more to this story, and I’m sure I’ll find it to be more riveting when it eventually unravels, but for the time being, it’s snooze-worthy. Still, Rosemary continuing to set her mind to something and doing it will always be something I can appreciate.

When Calls the Heart Season 12, Episode 7, “Dance the Night, Away” deals a few intriguing cards pertaining to pairs, and it does so in an understandably dramatic fashion. With five more episodes left and quite a few decks to still get through, it’ll be interesting to see how the show ties up some of the narratives presented here. More than anything, the production design within this episode is a true work of art, from scenic shots to believable interior locations that transport the audience to a time of roaring parties full of dazzling bits of color.

Stray Thoughts

  • I love that Allie and Oliver are still working together so much!
  • Also love the fact that Lee Coulter will continue to do anything and everything for this girl. My heart is so full.
  • Nathan and Elizabeth kissing by the tree made my breath hitch. They’re SO PRETTY. The shot was so stunning. I love it here.
  • Also, Nathan and Elizabeth giggling together while he tickles information out of her? Once more, with feeling, I love it here. But also, where are my fellow Timeless girlies because hi, yes, “You Made Me Love You” — “Hollywoodland,” anyone?
  • No, this heiress continues to not work for me. When will I care about her?
  • Rosemary, girly, we need to talk about your casting choices. Bill? Bill? No.
  • I’m so invested in Edie and Lucas!
  • HANDS! HANDS! No, seriously, that scene where Lucas and Edie’s hands brushed made me lose it a bit. Nothing tops a good hands scene. Also, the whole “I saw your light on.” Oh, this can so hit so hard if they do get together.
  • Fiona stay! Gah, I’m so sad about her leaving. 😭
