When Calls the Heart Season 12, Episode 8, “The Show Must Go On” Spoilers Ahead
When Calls the Heart’s “The Show Must Go On” deals with the ramifications of exciting moments going awry. It’s a slower episode, with quite a few things happening at once, but by the time it picks up at the end, it’s clear that we’re headed to a place where there will be more answers that stick.
Rosemary’s production of The Importance of Being Earnest goes public through a radio broadcast; Allie and Oliver make their case to Edie and the farmers; Elizabeth doubts herself after a conversation with a superior, and Fiona finally makes a decision that’s right for her.
When Calls the Heart Season 12, Episode 8 Continues to Hint How Lucas and Edie Can Be a Great Pair
The more we see Miranda MacDougall’s Edie Martell, the more I grow to care about her. Because of MacDougall’s performances, we can continue to understand the edges and pain Edie hides behind—the darkness and the frustration. She’s a woman who’s not only seen things, but she’s consistently trying to prove her worth and make a name for herself. That much is clear as day.
Since last week’s “Dance the Night Away” and every moment we’ve seen before, it’s been obvious that the reasons behind her decisions aren’t her own. It’s obvious that she cares about the same causes close to Lucas’ heart, but she’s pushing past them by focusing on what she can control, which in this episode, we learn, ties back to her uncle’s debt. In addition, while the coin’s case wasn’t all that intriguing before, if it is indeed somehow tied to Edie’s uncle then it’s undoubtedly about to become twice as fascinating.
At the same time, we, as viewers, have watched Lucas go through a very similar journey to find himself in the position he is in today. There were points in his past where he chose one outcome when another would’ve been better. There were doubts and uncertainties about his role in Hope Valley and if he truly belonged, which in a sense, became tied to Elizabeth. It’s after their breakup that Lucas finds so much of himself and becomes the man we see today, which in turn makes him the most gripping person to act as Edie’s foil.
Because ultimately, as much as Lucas has a plethora to be concerned with as a politian, he’s also reached a point where he isn’t as cautious of the enemies he’ll make. Instead, his focus today is on those whose beliefs aren’t being concerned by higher ups. Therefore, in When Calls the Heart Season 12, Episode 8, “The Show Must Go On,” his decision to keep fighting for Allie’s beliefs is the most adorable part of the episode. It’s what shows us the breath of changes he’s gone through, and it’s what proves his heart is in the right place.
And Edie’s heart is in the right place, too, because her hands are tied not by her own volition but by every opposing force she’s up against becuase of her uncle. She knows that Allie’s perspective is right. She knows McGinty is in the wrong—but how to move on from this is where her character journey will start to shine. Simultaneously, it’s necessary to point out that the trust between her and Lucas is growing so organically that my heart squeezed when he noticed that she wasn’t showing her tell. It’s moments like this that often mark how exceptional two people can be together, and it’s hard not to want more of them.
Fiona’s Decision and Rosemary’s Play
Fiona is one of the series’ best characters, making her exit that much sadder. Still, When Calls the Heart thankfully ensures that her journey is worth it and not one she has to settle on, which also comes through a lovely heart-to-heart with Elizabeth.
One thing about this series is that true love matters. Settling isn’t something that’s ever promoted, and for a character as fiercely independent and determined as Fiona, it’s so lovely to see that she isn’t forced into something she doesn’t want. Instead, it’s about the right time and the right place—the right opportunity to honor her character, which in this case is the decision to have her take the radio to Seattle when Rosemary can’t. It’s about a friendship and a partnership all at once, even at a distance. It’s narratives like this that feel right in honoring characters, even when they’re heartbreaking. Plus, Kayla Wallace is so fantastic in the role, and that’s a huge part of the reason her exit stings a bit.
Simply Being There
Nathan and Elizabeth aren’t a focus in When Calls the Heart Season 12, Episode 8, “The Show Must Go On,” yet the scenes we get between them are still so lovely to showcase what great partners they make. When it comes to love, sometimes it’s not about having the right words to say, but it’s about listening. It’s about being beside your partner as they rant about the awful day they’ve had and deciding to make dinner as a small way to show you revere them.
No, Nathan doesn’t wish Elizabeth was more like Diane, but as her partner, of course, he’d want her to be able to stand up for herself. He’d want her to have the confidence when she knows, without a shadow of a doubt, that she’s an incredible teacher no matter who says what. Of course, he’d want her to have the same unshakable faith in herself that he has for her. To Nathan, she’s not only a worthy teacher, but she’s an irreplaceable woman, a brilliant friend—the best of the best. So, it’s easy to adore the fact that he simply wants her to see herself the same way they all do.
“The Show Must Go On” is about honing things to perfection and ultimately understanding that sometimes, things still won’t go as we plan. Yet, when that happens, what we get in the aftermath can also be better than our wildest imaginations. Both in the big changes like with the radio show or in the case of a family having a lovely meal together, what matters at the end of the day is the people standing beside us. It’s about protecting those we care about and making sure that people are following their hearts, which is where so much of the show’s very own soul shines.
