It’s official—we’re heading back to Richmond! After nearly two years of teasing—we’re looking at you, Nick Mohammed (affectionately)—Ted Lasso is returning for Season 4. For real, for real, as confirmed by Apple TV+.
My biggest qualm with Season 3 was the uncertainty of whether this would be the end or not. We were often told that the series would have a three-arc run akin to Star Wars, yet the lack of concrete confirmation made it confusing. There’s currently no word on whether the fourth season will be the end, so at this point, we’re going to pretend it’s running forever until someone tells us otherwise. Still, it’s all happening so quickly, and there’s no way even to guess where it’ll go.
The last time we were at Richmond, we had bid adieu to the titular character—quite literally in the form of a song from all the players on the pitch. Hannah Waddingham’s Rebecca Welton was left crying at the airport while Brendan Hunt’s Beard was saying I do. And we were back in Kansas with Ted. But AFC Richmond doesn’t work without England, so imaginably, Ted will be returning, and it’s a matter of how or why and where this will go.
Few shows have the impact that Ted Lasso does. The words onward forward are perpetually inked on my skin for a reason. There’s something special here—indescribable, really. And sometimes it’s scary when something you love returns because how do we top what’s already there and perfect? How do we work in other storylines? Still, the world is an even darker place today than it was when the series first aired, and I do sincerely believe it could maybe fix us the way that it did in 2020. We all remember where we were and what everything was like.
At this point, I’m not even going to try to predict where Ted Lasso Season 4 will go. Predictions never bode well, anyway. What I do hope, however, is that the romance will return. I refuse to forget that this show did an excellent job of grounding itself in romance and vulnerability in Season 2, so if it brings back the love stories we’re all obsessed with, then the rest—well, that’s all aces, too. Ted Lasso Season 4 is a story about the underdogs, and it matters that each of the characters ends up in happier places than when they began. It matters that they’ll find hope and belief and community because that’s what this show’s always been about: the fact that people aren’t sad and alone. They’re together. They’re a team. They’re a found family.

What matters more than anything is that the series continues to be the type of positive reinforcement that reminds us all of why it matters to be open with ourselves and those around us. What matters is that, like we always have, we’ll continue to see ourselves in these characters and their journeys. Back into the locker room, onto the pitch, in offices, or at the Crown & Anchor, it feels lovely. It feels like home.
