Ghosts Season 5 Finale Spoilers Ahead
Ghosts delivers another wild two-part finale with the kind of ending that has me both nervous and hopeful because only this show could impressively evoke both. A good chunk of this season has focused on the art of giving and taking, so what we’re getting in the Season 5 finale is no small feat to really touch on why the found family element is the one constant throughout. The way that these characters will always show up for each other, whether dead or alive, adds indescribable heart to the series, and in a lot of ways, to TV in general.
There are a number of solid moments throughout the last two episodes that lead us right into the next season, for which we have to wait too long, but at least the renewal is something to hold us over. And more than anything, at least we’ve got some solid goodies, too.
The Real Legacy of Woodstone Mansion
There are a few things on Ghosts that get to me the way that Hetty recognizing Sam’s significance does. And sure, in true Hetty Woodstone fashion, she backpedals on it (with a remarkable performance from Rebecca Wisocky at the helm), but we know that deep down, she means every word. Sam is Hetty’s legacy. She’s the best thing to come from the Woodstone last name, and she’s the best thing to come from their deaths. The moment she set foot into the house, everything changed for the better, and that’s not something Hetty can shove aside in glee because the recognition is all there in her eyes.
If anything ever happened to Sam, it’d devastate Hetty to a point of no return. She can mock her incessantly and question literally everything she does all the time, but Sam is her second chance in every way. The daughter she never had and the best parts of her in more ways than one. That recognition and understanding of the profound ways in which Sam has changed their lives is huge for all the ghosts, and it’s what makes every part of this episode so lovely, despite how brief the whole fear-induced confession is.
And ultimately, because nothing is ever easy for Sam or Jay, the fact that she immediately gets news about her screenplay after last week’s “Polar Opposites” is also pretty great to give us a glimmer of hope where we can believe that, for a while at least, their financial troubles might stop plaguing them. Because really, how much longer can we keep doing this at this point? These kids need a break, and I need a break from being stressed for them.
The Ghosts Season 5 Finale Is Yet Another Wholesome Love Letter to Found Families
More than anything, the Ghosts Season 5 finale reassures viewers that this show is and will forever be about a found family. At some point, each of the ghosts will always step up for Sam and Jay, which makes Nancy revealing the secret about her real identity such a remarkable feat. A princess! Nancy is a princess! And her necklace, proving that she died on the property, makes Woodstone Mansion a historical landmark that cannot be demolished. Tad might’ve sold his shares to a capitalist company (typical!), but no matter what they do, our ghosties are free. The way that Season 5 has incorporated more of the basement ghosts is one of its strengths, and the way that it comes through in this episode showcases it as adorably as “Gate-gate” did with Isaac missing them.
And because of the verification process, Jay, Kyle, and Pete end up in London, where their return back leads to Pete fully disappearing in a way he’s never done before. There’s something really fascinating about how this episode ties characters like Nancy and Pete together, having them both play a crucial role in saving Woodstone while we’re also nearing the one-year anniversary of his and Alberta’s first real kiss. The parallels here are riveting, but more than anything, it’s the emphasis on how much love there is in the car, even with the fact that he doesn’t want to worry anyone.
On any other show, I would’ve been on pins and needles, concerned for Pete’s future. But this is Ghosts we’re talking about. There’s no way they’d ever take away one of the core eight without proper closure, so it’ll be interesting to see how they save Pete in Season 6.
For what it’s worth, the two episodes provide all the laughs and wholesome beats necessary to make Season 5 another winner in my book.
