Happy’s Place Season 1, Episode 18 Review: ‘Alarm Bells’

Takoda, Emmett, Bobbie, Gabby, and Isabella in Happy's Place Season 1, Episode 18.

Happy’s Place delivers an exhilarating season finale with “Alarm Bells,” leaving the door wide open for a more romantic sophomore season. Much like in “Heart of the Matter,” the episode centers around Bobbie and Emmett’s relationship, revealing that everyone in the tavern not only knows but they’ve been keeping them apart.

All of this comes into play simply because an argument about alarm systems causes Bobbie and Emmett to compete about its installation. At the same time, Isabella slowly loses it a little and gets everyone else. (Rightfully so.) Hijinks ensue, but the episode leaves viewers with an undeniable flicker of hope.

Happy’s Place Season 1 Finale Circles Back on Bobbie and Emmett’s Romance

In many ways, “Heart of the Matter” placed a provisional pin on whether we’d be getting any modicum of forward movement with Bobbie and Emmett. Yet, “Alarm Bells” signals that it’s absolutely happening. By revealing that everyone knows and it’s not just Isabella, the showrunners tell us that they’re interested in pursuing this relationship because it’s actually right for the characters. It’s now a matter of when not if.

In a nutshell, Bobbie and Emmett are not only best friends, but they’re absolutely mom and dad to everyone in the tavern, which then makes everything riskier. As often mentioned, friends to lovers is one of the best romance tropes for a reason, but it’s also one that requires a lot more careful decisions. Their breakup can be cataclysmic, and it would not only impact them, but it would hurt everyone in the tavern, too, because they’d be stuck in the middle. You don’t jump into something like this without weighing all the options and considering every possible outcome because the friendship alone is too precious to lose.

Still, the chemistry between them is not only there, but more importantly, Happy’s Place Season 1, Episode 18, “Alarm Bells,” proves that the adoration is present between both parties. Sure, we could have guessed that Emmett had feelings for Bobbie, but here, we actively see it. We watch him get flustered in a way that’s completely out of character for his usual brand of grumpiness, and we fully see that Bobbie’s safety is of utmost importance to him. It’s not just bantering with her that he loves, but it’s her. Full stop, written in his eyes, are the feelings of a man who’s never loved someone more than the 5’6 woman he’s willing to do anything for.

In addition, it doesn’t seem as though Emmett harbors the same fears that Bobbie might have. If she’d say something, a part of me does genuinely think he’d maybe leap forward. Yet, that’s what’s so important to explore, and there’s a good chance it’s what we’ll get when the show returns for Season 2. This might not be the slowest of slow burns, but it still needs to be properly paced in a way that reflects who they are and what they both want for their future. As the audience, we have to see all the development to fully understand that what we’ve been noticing is right and true and can last.

Happy’s Place Season 1, Episode 18, “Alarm Bells,” is a hilariously heartfelt finale that leaves viewers with a lot to think about and appreciate. A large part of the reason the show has quickly become a comfort watch for many is because of how effectively narratives like this remind us of the found family we’re growing to care for. Happy’s is a home away from home to so many people, and it’s also why this relationship matters not only to Bobbie and Emmett but to everyone in the tavern. (And also the viewers.)

Stray Thoughts

  • Isabella is every shipper in this episode.
  • Gabby and Steve cackling together took me out.
  • Isabella is me. I’m Isabella.
  • THEY KNOW. THEY’VE ALWAYS KNOWN. Oh, this is glorious.
  • Scream it with me, HEIGHT DIFFERENCE.
  • Everything about this is so silly I don’t know what to do about it.
  • “Are you God?” Yes, Isabella.
  • Whose expression matched yours best when Bobbie’s trying to “teach” Emmett how to shoot? Isabella’s? Gabby’s? Steve’s? Takoda’s? I’m all four of them.
  • “Of course, it’s obvious!” Steve’s voice killed me when he said that.
  • “Families can fall apart if mommy and daddy get divorced!”
  • POPPED IN TO CHECK ON YOU
  • “FOR MY OWN PEACE OF MIND.” We see you, Emmett.
