Happy’s Place Season 1, Episode 11 Review: ‘Heart of the Matter’

The latest episode of Happy’s Place is a dream for every person whose favorite romance trope is “friends to lovers.” Every word out of these characters’ mouths felt like something I was writing (and something I have written). This detail is also largely because this type of development is tried and true in sitcoms—and romance novels—for a reason. The formula works because it’s an incredibly accurate depiction of how situations pan out in the real world, which easily makes the scenario believable in fiction.

Additionally, and I’ve said this before, it’s so refreshing to see how accurately the show depicts OCD through Steve. More often than not, when media portrays our struggles, it’s a diluted and stereotypical version of what it actually is, yet that’s thankfully not the case with Happy’s Place. How “Heart of the Matter” ties the two narratives together to create a linear story that isn’t connected but can be serve as an intriguing reminder of how, sometimes, things don’t have to be perfectly cohesive in order to work.

Bobbie, Emmett, and Their Romantic Feelings

There’s something wholly satisfying about being a viewer who picks up on the clues writers drop, and that’s so much of the truth with Bobbie and Emmett. I am and will always be a hopeless romantic, and as a critic, that’s not something I sugarcoat. You’ll never catch me diminishing a show’s worth when there’s romance, and you’ll also never see me calling it a cliche when love is the one universal language we all speak.

It’s important, necessary, and always entertaining. So, while some readers have caught me making comments here and there about Bobbie and Emmett in the stray thoughts portion of my coverage, I genuinely didn’t think we’d get here this quickly. Quite frankly, I assumed it was the infectious chemistry between Reba McEntire and Rex Linn bleeding into the characters, but at the same time, nothing makes more sense now.

Bobbie and Emmett are best friends, and this is a fact that comes to life most effectively in “Fish Fry Monday.” The quiet tension in those scenes, as well as how the characters never have to hide anything from one another, makes the show’s obvious pairing even more lovely. Further, there’s something to be said about how the episode overly shows us what Bobbie is feeling before she finally confesses her feelings aloud to Isabella. She’s frustrated, confused, hilariously riled up, and, for once, unsure of what to do. Everything that transpires in the hospital after her outbursts works to add both levity and genuine stakes.

No, there’s nothing seriously wrong with Emmett, but the fact that there might’ve been is what has Bobbie on edge. Additionally, he knows it, too, and it’s subtly apparent that when he tells her he’d never jeopardize their friendship, he’s talking about the same thing. He’s also talking about romantic feelings. What’s fascinating about this narrative here is that no matter a person’s age, it’s terrifying to think of losing your best friend. It’s scary to risk everything for a little something more, even if that can also equate to a second chance at love because friendships are rare and beautiful gifts in our lives.

So, in many ways, it makes complete sense that Happy’s Place Season 1, Episode 11, “Heart of the Matter,” ends the way it does. We’re still at the beginning of their journey, even if it’s one built on a strong foundation. We have a long way to go before two extremely stubborn and inherently selfless people decide that it’s time to put their fear aside and jump into something bigger.

Plus, now that we know the feelings are there, it’s going to make every interaction they have that much more exhilarating to watch. The tension in the air will be thicker and more prominent. The jokes will hit differently. The longing gazes will mean so much more than they already do, and I, for one, can’t wait to see it.

Happy’s Place Season 1, Episode 11 Once Again Shines an Important Light on OCD

Because of how OCD is typically portrayed, people think that those of us with it maintain organizational patterns for arbitrary reasons. Yet, Happy’s Place shows us that it’s much more serious. (It also does a great job of it in “Don’t Sweat It.“) The voices in our head aren’t just whispers, but sometimes they’re screams. Steve uses the example of stepping on a crack, and it’s fascinating because it’s so very true. Today, that crack is the seat he sits in. For me, it’s specific items of clothing. Logically, we know that correlation doesn’t equate to causation in this matter. I know I can’t skew an entire series of events based on one small thing I did, but that doesn’t stop my brain from tormenting me.

Further, it’s vital that the episode exemplifies how therapy doesn’t just miraculously fix us. It’s a big deal that Steve changed his seat, even if it lasted a few seconds and Emmett was immediately rushed to the hospital. These two events aren’t at all connected, but it’s how our brains tie them together that makes the struggle that much more alarming in our minds. Yet, that small step to try is what putting in the work looks like. It’s also admirable that the episode presents two different sides to how people view us, like Takoda or Gabby. They both want the best for Steve, yet because of their upbringings, they both have different ways of responding to him.

Happy’s Place Season 1, Episode 11, “Heart of the Matter,” intricately ties two different storylines together in a significant fashion that brilliantly showcases character development and the series’ compelling relationships. It’s hilarious, but it’s also achingly heartfelt, and it continues to prove that the show’s already so promising in its debut season.

Stray Thoughts

  • I howled at Steve and Gabby going off about Emmett and “daddy.” I cannot with these two.
  • I also cannot deal with Steve wanting to refer Gabby to his therapist. And he should because, my God, this woman needs it. Her mom sounds like a piece of work.
  • Isabella’s reaction to Bobbie confessing her feelings for Emmett is basically me every time I write about them in my stray thoughts.
  • I actually still can’t believe this episode is real!? Like, I love being right? God bless.
  • Takoda remains an absolute angel. I genuinely cannot with what a gem of a character he is.
