Ghosts Season 4, Episode 22 Review: ‘The Devil Went Down to Woodstone’

Rose McIver as Sam, holding up Isaac's vampire book in Ghosts Season 4, Episode 22.

In true Ghosts fashion, the season finale leaves us with a daring cliffhanger and a surprisingly soft moment we weren’t expecting. Somehow, it’s already time for Isaac’s vampire book launch, but beyond that, Elias Woodstone has kept his promise to return. The episode also sees the return of Mary Holland’s Patience the Puritan, bringing the season’s arc full circle in a compelling manner.

Ghosts Season 4, Episode 22 Isn’t the Best Season Finale, But It’s Still Solid

Of all the season finales, “The Devil Went Down to Woodstone” might be my least favorite yet, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a thoroughly riveting episode full of great moments for our beloved little weirdos. After last week’s “Kyle,” the timeline is a little odd to grapple with, but the events that lead to the jaw-dropping final moment aren’t all that shocking. Structurally, the episode balances character arcs pretty well as it continues to work with what we’ve been setting up throughout the entire season, with big changes finally coming to fruition for Sam and Jay.

Thematically, much of what happens in the episode also works when we look at how realistic it actually is in a largely fantastical space. In the real world, every time we come close to getting the thing we’ve been working towards, something has to derail us. At a moment when writers are delivering more “realism” on TV, this is the kind I’d prefer as opposed to unnecessary character deaths. (Thank God Ghosts isn’t that kind of show!) Still, it makes perfect sense for Sam and Jay to have yet another huge obstacle to fight against as they maneuver through being a successful author and restaurant owner.

It was never going to be easy for the two of them because why would it be? That’s not how the real world works, and despite their little bubble, it all adds up that Elias would be the one to get to Jay when he isn’t aware of Elias’ new powers as a demon. Yet, the way it all happens makes Ghosts Season 4, Episode 22, “The Devil Went Down to Woodstone,” a hilariously wild episode. Bringing Patience back because she not only senses Elias’ presence but also because he’s actually done something demonic makes the episode well-written, considering we also opened the season with her questioning everything at Woodstone. It’s like a little treat that this time, she’s looking out for them instead of wanting to see them all suffer. (Wipes a tear from her eye.)

It’ll be fascinating to see how long this arc will carry us through Season 5 and if it will bleed into Season 6 as well. However, Jay’s unfortunate deal with the devil isn’t all that happens in the Ghosts’ Season 4 finale, but another romance blooms as Alberta and Pete finally take their relationship to the next level. As one of the romantic relationships that has been building from day one, it’s going to be interesting to see how the series keeps them together when almost everyone is paired up now. (Hetty and Trevor, hurry up already.) I do have a soft spot for the whole “right person, wrong time” actually turning into the “right person, right time” pairing, but we need a bit more for these two to become another it couple on the show. Still, it wraps up the finale with a nice little treat that makes it a little less grim.
