The road to a new NFL season continues in Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Buffalo Bills Episode 2. The second episode builds upon the foundation from the season premiere and delves into the personal stories of the players and coaches. As a fan of the Bills, it’s nice to step away from the grandeur of our MVP, Josh Allen, and spend more time with local players, like Joe Andressen, and other well-known players, like Damar Hamlin. While the season continues to remain light on drama, Hard Knocks: Training Camp magnifies the culture that the Buffalo Bills have built for themselves.
James Cook’s Hold-In Simmers But Doesn’t Boil Over
As mentioned in my Episode 1 feature, James Cook and his contract negotiations were barely featured, even though that’s been a huge point of discussion this offseason. Episode 2 remedies this by acknowledging it at the start. We see footage of Cook participating in meetings with the running back coaches, watching film. General Manager Brandon Beane has nothing but good things to say about the elite RB, but of course, there has yet to be a resolution. What I do respect about this whole thing is that the Bills organization and Cook are keeping this in-house and not letting the outside noise affect the team.
For Bills fans keeping up with the team outside of Hard Knocks: Training Camp, we do know that after four missed practices, Cook has recently engaged in practice. I’m sure we’ll get this update in Episode 3, and hopefully, in the coming days, a new contract can be worked out for Cook. As great as it is to see Ty Johnson and Ray Davis getting more action—and in Davis’ case, getting his hand at kicking during the preseason game against the Giants—it’s important for Cook to have valuable practice time before the regular season is in full swing. Cook was part of what made the Bills’ offense dynamic in the previous season. He absolutely should advocate for being paid what he’s worth. We’re seeing this conversation around running backs across the league with the Eagles’ Saquon Barkley and Colts’ Jonathan Taylor. Cook can’t keep cookin’ without proper funds, but he also can’t stay out of the kitchen for long without risking losing his RB1 position.
Major update: James Cook has extended his contract with the Buffalo Bills. He has signed a four-year, $48 million extension that includes $30 million guaranteed (which roughly averages to $12 million/year). This marks the most guaranteed money for a running back in the last five years. According to Cook’s agent and official news from the Buffalo Bills, Cook could only envision himself as a Buffalo Bill. I think it’s safe to say that Bills Mafia took a collective sigh of relief now that our Cook is staying in this kitchen!
Hard Knocks Highlights Buffalo Joe and Scooter King K. J. Hamler
It’s rare to hear stories of locals making the hometown professional football team. The 2006 sports movie Invincible is the closest that average fans know about, which documents the story of Vince Papale (played by Mark Wahlberg) joining the Eagles after an open tryout in the ’70s. But Buffalo has their own in linebacker Joe Andreessen, aka Buffalo Joe. He grew up watching games at the Ralph Wilson Stadium and is now playing there after a rookie mini camp in 2024. Where I think Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Buffalo Bills Episode 2 succeeds for me is spotlighting the more personal stories of the coaches and players, and one of the best examples for that in this episode is with Buffalo Joe. We get a full picture of Andreeseen: a hometown hero in Lancaster who exceeded everyone’s expectations, yet a rookie player who still has a lot to learn and live up to. His dropped ball during the Giants game and Beane’s reaction shows that Buffalo Joe still has to step it up to prove he deserves his spot on the 53-man roster. However, it is genuinely heartwarming watching him with his mom at his Lancaster stomping grounds, interacting with locals and peers alike. There’s a sense of family baked into Western NY, and Buffalo Joe embodies it.
Between Episodes 1 and 2, K. J. Hamler is the breakout star of Hard Knocks: Training Camp. The wide receiver first endeared audiences during Episode 1 when he was riding around campus with a kid’s scooter. After he loses it between Episode 1 and 2, Hamler makes it a point to buy himself a fancy adult scooter—bell included! He’s a fun personality to showcase over these first two episodes. Plus, he has something to prove. Hamler stood out during the first preseason game with his 39-yard touchdown. He’s not a guarantee for the 53-man roster, but personally, I hope he sticks around at least for the practice squad because he’s a delight.
Don’t Stop Billievin’: Damar Hamlin Continues Fighting On
I remember where I was when Damar Hamlin went into cardiac arrest during the Bills-Bengals game on January 2, 2023. I was in my apartment cooking dinner, game on in the other room. I heard the game kept going to commercial break without really knowing what was happening. I checked Twitter, and Hamlin’s name was popping up on my timeline from non-Bills fans. Sure enough, I went back into the living room and I watched a replay of the hit that brought him down. Messages from friends of mine who know I’m a Bills fan poured in. I waited patiently for updates and prayed that Hamlin would live to play another day. It’s a night that I still get chills thinking about—not just because of the waiting for whether he would survive, but how he not only survived but brought people together in a supernatural way.
Damar Hamlin temporarily died on that field in Cincinnati. He won the game of life thanks to first responders, the medical team at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, and the grace of God. Since then, Hamlin has made it a priority to make the most of his opportunity. His foundation, The Chasing M Foundation, has made it a priority to teach CPR and provide AEDs for youth sports organizations across the country. He continues to press in as one of the Bills’ safeties, who has shown improvement in the most recent season. Yet, what he’s doing is hard. To the work he feels called to do as a player and person, Hamlin says in this episode that he has to be a fighter, a finisher, and faithful. During one of the last days of camp, Hamlin is sitting on the field and openly prays to God for the strength and resilience to keep doing the hard work he’s called to.
Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Buffalo Bills Episode 2 builds upon the foundation of Episode 1 by leaning more into the personal stories of the Buffalo Bills. And there isn’t a more hopeful, inspiring story than that of Damar Hamlin. He lives to fight another day to be the best player he can for his teammates, as well as a man to teach and use his story for good. Even if you aren’t a sports fan, it’s hard to deny the power and awe of Hamlin’s story—surviving a horrific, one-in-a-million cardiac arrest that stopped the NFL community in its tracks.
No team is perfect. The Bills lost their first preseason game to the Giants at the end of Episode 2, and the organization needs to come to a resolution with James Cook. Yet the bond and camaraderie exhibited between the players, coaches, and higher-ups remain distinct among other NFL teams. Hard Knocks: Training Camp Episode 2 reveals to audiences what Bills Mafia has known for years— a team that’s easy to root for and worth believing in.
