I’m two years too late to the party, but Hallmark’s 3 Bed, 2 Bath, 1 Ghost is one of the sweetest and coziest films to come from the network. Starring Julie Gonzalo, Madeleine Arthur, Chris McNally, and more, the story is a wholesome, sparkling delight in every way possible. Hallmark romances understandably aren’t for everybody, but some movies should be. 3 Bed, 2 Bath, 1 Ghost is one of those films—achingly tender, vulnerable, and featuring a believable second chance romance, everything about it shines.
The film is also ideal for viewers who love CBS’s Ghosts—the scaredy cats like me who can only handle spirits in the form of charming socialites or gilded age heiresses. The ones who haunt adorably and not with the intention to scare. The ones that make magical realism the kind of genre that’s so cozy and easy to dive into, it’s shocking that there isn’t more. And with all of this, every part of the movie works because of how it examines romance, friendship, and second chances.
We don’t spend too much time questioning or breaking down why Anna can see Ruby, and that’s okay because it’s clear enough. The two women are tethered by their inability to see what’s right in front of them. They’re broken by the loss of love in their lives, and they need each other to move on. It’s simple in that way, yet the invisible string that brings out the admiration they have for each other is exactly what makes everything so precious. It also helps that Gonzalo and Arthur are fantastic scene partners, making us believe in the budding friendship between the women.
Films like this have a fairly similar premise. The human is questioned when it looks like she’s talking to herself. A few things make sense to onlookers, and everything becomes harder to explain until the last minute. We don’t have nearly enough screentime to explore every little emotion, yet with everything that we get, the screenplay ensures that it all feels satisfying. By the end of it, I’m not left wanting more because I feel like the narrative is missing something, but because I adore these characters so much, I want to see more of them.
And when we have characters that are this easy to love, it makes the entire film that much more enjoyable. It’s not every movie that becomes a yearly rewatch, but I’m calling it now: 3 Bed, 2 Bath, 1 Ghost is already one of those films for me. I’m already itching to rewatch it, and I just finished. Its sole flaw? That title. But who am I to talk? Titles are hard.
In addition to the gorgeous and genuinely heartwarming friendship between Anna and Ruby, we get two precious second chance romances. McNally and Gonzalo’s real-life chemistry bleeds so beautifully onto the screen that even while we understandably don’t spend too much time with them, we can see why they’re meant for each other. We can feel it. The story is, in more ways than one, about two sets of second chances, so the plot twist of Charlie’s identity and why he matters in this story made me straight up weep.
Plus, watching characters openly speak Spanish? Seeing an exploration of fathers and daughters and the connections that matter? There are so many small beats to appreciate throughout the film that I legitimately cannot believe how this one slipped past my radar. It feels like a movie I would’ve loved broadcast on a bigger screen. It feels like a movie with such a rich history that I’m shocked it isn’t based on a book. The scenery, the autumnal vibes, the gorgeous estate—every part of it is stunning. Full stop.
In short, 3 Bed, 2 Bath, 1 Ghost is a spooky season must-watch—a glowing second chance romance and a wholesome exploration of lost souls finding their way back home. It’s a story about uncovering and preserving pieces of lost history, all while underscoring how important it is to take risks in the present and how important it is to live.
