Ghosts Season 5, Episode 5 Review: ‘T-Daddy’

Asher Grodman as Trevor in Ghosts Season 5, Episode 5.

It’s a T-Daddy double feature month because coming off the heels of last week’s “Bring Your Daughter to Work Day,” we get another emotional episode that centers around Ghosts establishing how important it is to take up opportunities while people are able to.

But that’s not all, Mahesh employees have decided to unionize, believing that the new Porsche in their backyard is an excuse for Jay not to pay them more of a living wage. It follows up with a hilarious Hetty flashback, all while continuing to allow the season to once again serve as an example of how to balance multiple character arcs.

Trevor’s Understanding as a Father Continues to Stand Out in “T-Daddy”

There’s something really profound about how Ghosts Season 5, Episode 5, “T-Daddy,” explores career choices and the concept of living life. The internet loves to point out and mock how the people who travel to Europe once never let it go, but there really is something so incredible about the first time you step outside of your comfort zone and do something completely different. There’s also something about chasing careers that may not exactly work out in an actual job in that same field. If I had a nickel for every time someone told me I was making a mistake by majoring in English, I could pay my bills with my eyes closed.

We know. We get it. But life really is so fragile and so unpredictable that it’s important to take risks while we can. It’s important to live, and no one gets this better than Trevor—a man whose life was unfortunately cut short at the height of his safe and bustling career.

He’s also lucky as a ghost to have the type of power that allows him to continue working, and despite how hilarious it is that he literally has more money than Sam and Jay, his choice to let Abby go to France to study poetry by funding the entire thing tells us how much the afterlife has changed him. How important it is for his daughter to get this chance to really live because it’s not something he could do. And it works so well right now, during this season, because of everything we’ve seen in his character growth.

Ghosts Season 5, Episode 5 Also Focuses on Financial Troubles

As much as it makes me anxious that Ghosts continues to be so relatable (because hi, yes, raise your hand if you’re not on the struggle bus right now), it’s also so incredibly important that the show continues to address just how hard various markets are. Finance is, to a degree, easy. We laugh about it, but it’s what the real world looks like, too. Independent businesses, restaurants, entertainment outlets, and everything else can rarely hold a candle to the stock market and whatever else that’s backed by billion-dollar corporations. And while a person like Jay deserves to have his restaurant do better, it’s also fully understandable that Chris falling through the roof would’ve messed with that.

It’s admirable that Ghosts doesn’t just wave a magic wand and fix things, but rather shows us how recovery takes time. Very few people find success easily, and for others, it takes time. It’s also so telling that Jay isn’t a white man either, and that’s even more imperative to note that it’s always twice as hard for people of color to make it in any business. In every field, in every area, this is a colossal problem that still hasn’t been resolved. And instead of going forward in the real world, we keep backtracking instead, making it that much more horrifying. I want the success of Mahesh more than anything because Jay has deserved it from the very beginning, but it also feels necessary for Ghosts to highlight how terrible and unfair it is out there.

Still, Ghosts Season 5, Episode 5, “T-Daddy,” is a solid episode that’s equal parts funny and meaningful. We’re five episodes into the season, yet it feels like so much has happened, making everything twice as exciting because there’s nothing quite like it on TV right now.

Stray Thoughts

  • Why is this gurgle so exciting?! 😂
  • “I can’t believe that a ghost has money for a Porsche,” took me out.
  • GD 😂
  • Jay not letting go of the guac is so funny. But like, so relatable it hurts.
  • Flower calling Jay “Jeremiah” also took me out 😭
  • OMG Hetty hopping into the convertible after she realized it has massage functions! I need her and Trevor back together like I need air.
  • Sam loving the convertible is everything.
  • “Aw, Trevor. This is great. He wants to follow in your capitalist pig footsteps.” God, I love this show.
  • “How does a ghost have so much money?” BRO. MOOD.
  • Sam being into F1 😂
  • Hetty’s dress is so cute in flashbacks!!
  • I miss Sas. Does anyone else miss Sas. I need a Sas-centric episode stat.
