Happy’s Place Season 2, Episode 2 Review: ‘I’ve Got a Secret’

Steve side eyes Emmett in Happy's Place 2x02.

I have been in the trenches shipping Emmett and Bobbie since Season 1, but the only thing I can say right now is not like this. And granted, this is such a norm in comedies, but I would’ve preferred it if things had gone a little differently. Still, Happy’s Place does something really fascinating in “I’ve Got a Secret,” and it shows us how deeply important these characters are in each other’s lives.

More importantly, it gives us insight into exactly what makes them a family, and it’s these very secrets that are tethering them together when they can also be free from its snares. Oh, paradoxes. It’s a solid episode, ridiculously funny, too, but things are a little sour, and there are two ways in which things can go.

Bobbie and Emmett Kiss Again in Happy’s Place Season 2, Episode 2 – But Secrets Still Stand Before Them

After last week’s “Promises, Promises,” Emmett goes back and forth about telling Bobbie the truth in “I’ve Got a Secret.” But one statement from her stops him in his tracks. Now here’s the thing: comedies have a ton of room to grow where romantic relationships are concerned. It’s okay that this relationship is doomed before it’s even begun because if they are endgame (which we can now be certain they are), then a second chance at love will hit even harder.

But if this goes on longer than a few episodes and we basically get to a point where Bobbie learns the truth about Emmett’s lie from someone other than him, then it’ll get even uglier, and it’d mar everything. It’s not fun to start a relationship on the wrong foot, especially with something as precious and monumental as this, so I really hope this secret doesn’t stay hidden longer than maybe an episode or two.

That said, we also have to scream about the second kiss because it’s so refreshing and incredible to continue watching a relationship unfold between two people in a demographic that doesn’t get a lot of room to shine on TV. We’re constantly watching teenage couples or young love while Hollywood explicitly discriminates through ageism toward anyone older, so it’s everything to watch Bobbie and Emmett kiss like it’s their last night on earth. Get it, cuties! Let’s go.

Gabby Is the Real Rock in Isabella’s Journey

More than anything, what’s sticking with me after Happy’s Place Season 2, Episode 2, “I’ve Got a Secret,” is Gabby and Isabella’s conversation about how Gabby was the first person to make Isabella feel welcome. I said it in “Baby Doll,” but we don’t give Gabby enough credit for how deeply she loves everyone at the tavern. She may be selfish at times, but Gabby loves with her whole heart, in every way, and she’s the real rock now.

She was Bobbie’s rock, too, not just Emmett, and that’s something that I’d love to see the show acknowledge because female friendships are just as important as romantic relationships, and their friendship is one that’s stood out from the very beginning. No one loves with the depth that Gabby loves, and it doesn’t matter if she’s over the top about it because she feels everything fully. Her love is achingly genuine, and in truth, the closest people to you are the ones who’ll mock you.

Politeness is reserved for those who don’t know you well enough. But there’s a reason close friends and family see the good, bad, and ugly and still love us through it all. That’s how Gabby’s been for all of them, and really, she should get Happy’s house. I’d be all for that.

Stray Thoughts

  • “You don’t have a pole at your house.”
  • “He thinks you’re a hussy.” OMG 😂
  • I want to be as mature as Takoda when I grow up.
  • I’m getting whiplash from this episode, but Emmett’s flannel is great.
  • “No, that was a lunatic.”
  • TELL HER!!!
  • Stop kissing when there are secrets between you!! I’m stressed!! But also keep going because it’s hot, but just please come clean. I beg of you.
  • “Dear lord. Help me figure out how to buy Happy’s house. Amen.” 😂
  • Takoda really is everything, in every way possible. Who’s doing it like this man?
