Ghosts Season 5, Episode 7 Review: ‘The Proposal’

Nancy, Isaac, and Pete with the basement ghosts in Ghosts Season 5, Episode 7.

Ghosts quietly changes plenty in “The Proposal,” making a clear statement about why no one should settle, and it’s everything I could personally want as a romance fan. And while the show’s never overtly been a romance, how the sitcom carefully delivers some of the most memorable love stories is why it’s so lovely, with Sam and Jay at the top of the list.

The episode centers primarily around the relationships, leaving one thing clear while another remains unclear and in the ethers. It’s not the strongest arc, but it’s necessary, and it’s significant to move these characters forward.

Ghosts Season 5, Episode 7 Focuses on Bela and Eric

In a way, I’m glad the show isn’t stringing Eric along for longer than necessary because it was always clear that Bela didn’t love him the way he loved her. And as much as it was great to see her while she was happy and taken care of, it’s also a far better outcome that the show is making its stance on settling clear. Life is too short and too unpredictable, and considering these characters are surrounded by ghosts who died too soon, it’s a solid message for the show to deliver that no one should have regrets.

We laugh at Bela’s obsession with hooking up with the ghosts, and it’s a good thing it’s happened at least once (Go, Sas!). Still, Bela is also a compelling character who deserves genuine happiness, so it’s easy to adore the fact that Jay sees this and tells her what she needs to do because he knows what it’s like to be in a deeply loving and committed marriage. He knows that he’d rather live in a far-off haunted mansion with his wife than ever go a day without Sam, and all of this matters so very much.

More than that, I hope Ghosts Season 5, Episode 7, “The Proposal,” is the beginning of Bela finding a lasting love story. I hope it’s the show’s way of telling us that they’ll eventually give her the happy ending she deserves with someone she loves so much that even the mere thought of hooking up with Trevor is a big no for her. Because it’s what she deserves, and it’s what Eric deserves, too.

And the episode ending with Jay proposing to Sam all over again? Be still, my heart. This is how you give the character a second chance while also letting the audience in on it, too, and the fact that this time, Sam is surrounded by the ghosts? So many tears.

Is It Really Over for Sas and Joan?

It’s only been seven episodes, but every episode we’ve spent without Sas, his absence has been felt, so I really, really hope the show didn’t somehow get rid of Joan off-screen. It could’ve been so perfect if she’d returned in the Thanksgiving special, but I also want to hope that because she’s so important to Sas, and therefore, so important to us, then if they aren’t meant to be, we’ll get closure the way we did with Bela and Eric.

It’s riveting, because we’ve only had seven episodes in Season 5 so far, yet it feels like so much has already happened that it’s legitimately wild to think about. Still, this really is the beginning, so possibilities for growth and more revelations coming to life are endless, and I, for one, want to see all of it. The little moments are what continue to make this show so indescribably special.

Stray Thoughts

  • The amount of times I said poor Eric in this episode.
  • Genuinely, we don’t talk enough about how precious Sam and Jay are and how much they adore each other. Their love story is so special to me.
  • BUT I MISS HETTY AND TREVOR. A LOT.
  • I also really miss Joan.
  • And Flower.
  • Isaac not being able to sleep standing up 😂
  • No, but also, Sas deserves all the things, and dream Sas having all the adventures means so much to me. Get it, sweet baby angel.
  • I genuinely can’t get over how stunning the exterior shots of Woodstone Mansion are this season. ALL THE FALL FOLIAGE!!
