Abbott Elementary’s ‘Candygrams’ Gives Us Another Milestone in Gregory and Janine’s Relationship

A large part of the reason why sitcoms and comedies are such comfort shows for so many of us is because they remind us of the joy in the ordinary. Where romantic relationships are concerned, they give us every milestone and every significant moment, without putting an unnecessary mid-way rift between the couple for the sake of drama. Such is ceaselessly the case with Abbott Elementary, and in the same way that its Season 4 Valentine’s Day episode gave us Gregory and Janine’s first “I love you,” the Season 5 holiday special, “Candygrams,” shows us their process of moving in together.

Abbott Elementary understands that Gregory and Janine are hugely important to the viewers and that these moments matter for the bigger picture. They matter because we care about them, and they especially matter on a show like Abbott Elementary, because, as much as Janine knows Gregory is different from Tariq, it’s clear that she hasn’t processed just how much. The utter shock in her realization that Gregory moving in would mean that they’d equally split rent and all of the utilities to ensure that everything is fair made me so sad for a beat because Janine should’ve never had to deal with Tariq’s ways in the first place.

There’s something so rewarding about seeing every milestone for a beloved couple, and this one’s everything we need to confirm that Gregory and Janine are endgame. We already knew this, yes. We didn’t need more proof, but it’s still so lovely to see it when there aren’t many TV relationships on our screens outside of couples in romance shows.

It’s also so sweet to dedicate a good chunk of the episode to their arc because we haven’t gotten nearly enough in Season 5 so far. Plus, Gregory and Janine’s relationship is integral to the series, and Jacob’s over-the-top reaction proves it delightfully. He is all of us. They’re the romance of the show, even though “Candygrams” also does plenty to showcase the progression of Ava and O’Shon’s relationship, too.

Seeing the show embrace the two of them and continuing to add layers to their relationship allows for even more levity than the series is known for. It gives us something sweet to hold onto with this new beginning and how it’ll continue to change their dynamic for the better. We already watched them host a party together in “Game Night,” but seeing them take this further step and move in is obviously so much bigger.

In addition, there’s something to be said about how their communication continues to strengthen because while Gregory initially poses the idea of looking at apartments as a ruse, the fact that he opens up about wanting something that the two of them start together is a big deal. It’s important to allow them to continue to stay on the same page that allows for equal growth and revelations in the relationship. It allows them to stay honest with each other. It allows them to grow their love through an even lovelier friendship that stands as a solid foundation.
