Ghosts Season 5, Episode 19 Review: ‘Gate-gate’

Sam, Jay, Joan, Sas, and Trevor in Ghosts Season 5, Episode 19.

A bit like last week’s “Under New Management,” Ghosts doesn’t give us too much character development in “Gate-gate,” outside of Tad finally letting go of his grip on the restaurant. With three more episodes left that’ll presumably leave us with a cliffhanger, it’s hard not to feel nervous about where the season will go and how it’ll leave these characters in another tough spot they’ll have to find a way out of.

But while the tension is lacking in this episode, the wholesome beats are still thankfully present with Isaac and the basement ghosts. And, more importantly, Joan is still here!

There’s nothing on this show that would devastate me more than Sam and Jay losing the B&B or Jay losing Mahesh. Anything else, I’d understand, but a narrative in which either of them has to compromise on their dreams like this would wreck me. That’s why there’s at least plenty to appreciate with the fact that Tad’s backing out and also continuing to support the restaurant, so Jay can do whatever he wants at his restaurant.

Interestingly, as one of my favorite marriages on TV, it’s lovely to see Sam and Jay use their love story as an example to save another potentially. Scandals and betrayals are one thing, but recognizing that married people can work and spend time together is a really fascinating detail that I wish more shows were aware of. No matter how frustrating any arc can be for a few moments, if Sam and Jay are okay, then so am I. If they’re dealing with the issue together, then everything is lovely. It’s wholesome. It’s hopeful. And weirdly, it’s momentarily nice to see Tad want to try again with his wife.

Anytime you tell me that Isaac feels something, I do, too. And there’s something really sweet about the fact that the elections have actually brought him closer to the basement ghosts in a genuine manner. His inability to sleep lying down isn’t forced or driven by something he wants to achieve for himself, but it’s driven by the fact that he actually misses them. It’s an adorable sign that, in spending time with them, he opened himself up to who they actually are and, for once, doesn’t want to change a thing about them. All he wants is to be around them as they are.

It’s scenes like this in more quiet episodes that show us exactly how far these characters have come and why it’s so, so wholesome to continue watching their journey in the afterlife. It’s especially thrilling for a character like Isaac, who’s spent so much time chasing after his own wants as opposed to just existing in a space with others, and this new development feels particularly right for his character.

Stray Thoughts

  • The way Sas talks about Joan 🥹 The way he’s obsessed with her words. CAN I CRY!?!?
  • Isaac are you okay??? What is happening??
  • Mahesh is saved!!!
  • I need Hetty and Trevor back together before I started screaming.
