When we last left Serenity, it was easy to wonder whether the show was changing Ty and Annie’s endgame solely based on the slight unease in which their relationship was panning out. And while drama in young adult relationships isn’t rare, it was also easy to hope that it’d maybe be the distance would merely be a blip in their relationship. But according to an exclusive with showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson at Us Weekly, Carson Rowland is indeed exiting the series ahead of the Sweet Magnolias Season 5 premiere, dropping early next month on June 11.
In the interview, Anderson states, “In his leaving, we wanted to make the best of the situation and look at what happens when people leave the people they love to chase a dream.” It’s unclear if this means Rowland won’t ever return to the show or if he’ll be a guest star in later seasons, but it’s strange to think of the show without Ty.

It’s also unclear exactly how the show will feel without Ty, and it’s a tough pill to swallow when Ty and Annie were surprisingly the best part of Season 4. Their dynamic felt fresh and nuanced, giving us the kind of old-school friends-to-lovers arc we hadn’t had for a while. Still, in a lot of ways, the character journey for Carson Rowland’s Ty does make sense if his dreams are a huge part of the show, but exactly how that’ll work out later down the line and whether it’ll feel earned, only time will tell.
It isn’t uncommon to see actors exit roles like this when they’re cast in other projects, so while it’s understandable, we hope that there’s at least closure for the characters in a manner that feels right for them. More than anything, when it’s the show’s final season, we hope that means he’ll at least return for the goodbye portion of it. As a series, Sweet Magnolias is mostly focused on the main women, but still, their kids are just as important to the equation.
