Sometimes you start a show, and from the first episode, it’s easy to tell that you’re about to watch something special—brilliant, in every way a story can be. That was Widow’s Bay earlier this year when I first pressed play on my screeners. I came in as a longtime fan of Matthew Rhys, and left in awe of everyone involved, including Rhys, whose historical win at the 2026 Emmy Awards is immensely deserved.
Sweeps can sometimes be frustrating because it’s easy to want to give every show a fair chance, but with Widow’s Bay, it’s fully deserved. Innovative and whip-smart, Katie Dippold and Hiro Murai’s team-up is indeed for the books. Rarely does a show deserve something that’s this extraordinary in genre-bending because it’s far from an easy task. In fact, it’s a lot harder than it looks. Spoofs are one thing, but true horror and true comedy are a completely different ballpark, and Widow’s Bay finds the perfect sweet spot.
Out of the 19 awards it was nominated for at the 2026 Emmys, Widow’s Bay took home 14, and every single one is rightfully deserved. Kate O’Flynn’s remarkably compelling performance as Patricia Moyer landed her the Outstanding Supporting Actress win, and Stephen Root also won for his role as Wyck in Outstanding Supporting Actor. Dippold and Murai both won for outstanding writing and directing, respectively, and the show thankfully won best comedy. (Betty Gilpin also won the weekend before, with a few technical awards, too!)

“But is Widow’s Bay even a comedy?” I keep seeing on social media, and the answer is an emphatic yes. Unlike The Bear, which has frustrated a lot of us with its comedy category when it should’ve been drama, Widow’s Bay is hilarious. And that’s the sole reason why someone like me—a massive scaredy-cat—can stomach it. Because heavier narratives trigger my anxiety, I have to be in a very specific mood to watch The Bear, whereas I can put on Widow’s Bay anytime and rewatch it.
And it’s not just the jokes that hit, but it’s the physical comedy that makes it so masterful. It’s why Rhys, O’Flynn, Root, and Gilpin are so deserving of their awards, because the physical component is huge in ensuring the comedy lands. Those of us who’ve been watching from the beginning are consistently finding new ways to convey just how much of a treasure it is. And fresh is always the word that comes to mind because in a sea of amazing shows, there’s really nothing as unique as Widow’s Bay. And it’s been an incredible year for TV, so that’s saying something.
