Anna Pigeon Gives Us an Emotional Season 1 Penultimate

Molly visits Anna in Anna Pigeon Episode 9.

For a penultimate episode, Anna Pigeon delivers all that’s necessary for us to reach a coherent and worthy finale by next week. We won’t have all the answers, but we need some sort of substantial closure to give us as much as possible to indicate that these characters are on their way toward growth.

After last week’s “The Death Grin” explored romantic relationships, “Nature vs Nurture” dives deeper into the platonic angle, giving us more insight into Anna and Molly’s sisterhood. It finally feels like Anna’s about to make a substantial breakthrough, and Jeremiah’s threats are sure to get worse.

It would’ve been too jarring if Anna Pigeon killed off a character like Jesse in the first season, so it makes complete sense that he’s alive. More than anything, the episode supplies us with some necessary backstory to understand what Jesse’s done in the past and how he ended up at the park in the first place. Conveniently, it’s also fascinating to see that Molly’s now met both the guys in Anna’s life, and that both women get to show their skills in medicine.

More importantly, it’s a good thing to see that Anna and Jesse are on good terms, even after she rejected him. While this bit of information doesn’t tell us much about what the future will look like, it does remind us that these characters are not only good people, but they’re on the right path toward doing what’s right for them. And interestingly, with Jesse staying, I’m curious to see what that means in terms of how he’s using the skills that he’s honed.

The best part of “Nature vs Nurture” is that we legitimately get a crack in the walls Anna barricades herself around. She’s not only keeping secrets, but she most certainly needed her sister to talk some sense into her and get her to understand that she can’t keep living the way she is. As Anna says at the end with her narration, “Being seen is the best way to survive.” And there’s nothing truer than that when it comes to someone who’s not only experienced grief but also firmly believes she’s a solitary creature.

Because the thing is, Anna isn’t alone. “The Rope” proved this with all the characters who showed up for her, and physically bringing Molly into this episode serves as an incredible reminder of the fact that she wants nothing but the best for her. The same can also be said about Fredrick, who’s physically in New York trying to figure out what went on the night of the party. There’s something to be said about how Fredrick and Molly switch places in this episode, and while it could mean nothing—it could also be something. Either way, it’s lovely to know that so many people care about Anna, but that she’s finally seeing it, too.

As a penultimate episode, Anna Pigeon’s “Nature vs. Nurture” does plenty to usher us toward a conclusion that can make or break the season. It’s a solid episode, brought to life with significant narrative beats that contribute to character growth.
