‘This Could Be Us’ by Kennedy Ryan Review

This Could Be Us by Kennedy Ryan book cover, story of Soledad and Judah.

This Could Be Us by Kennedy Ryan takes readers back to Skyland, following Soledad Charles’ story in a beautifully memorable way. In truth, what Ryan accomplishes in this novel is something that’s truly challenging. As a book that features one of my biggest triggers, in the hands of another author, I would’ve probably opted out of reading, but Ryan is nothing if not careful, precise, and respectful in how she tells deeply human stories with immense, immaculate heart.

Soldad’s story is a heartbreaking one—her mother dies of cancer, her husband is the worst kind of narcissist to exist, and as she tries to navigate through it all, Ryan ensures that she comes up on top. Further, quiet moments within the book aren’t as fluffy or warm as some readers might prefer, but Ryan provides an extensive trigger warning for preparation. However, what’s important to note is the brilliant marriage she presents between heavier topics with light, inspiring beats. It’s early to admit, but it’s undeniable that This Could Be Us by Kennedy Ryan is one of the best books of the year.

Some novels are so gorgeously written that they’re hard to write about in review form. Ryan’s prose are always impossible to describe, and something about them in This Could Be Us take the words on the page to new heights. (Seeing these stories come to life on screen is going to be one of the biggest treats ever.) Additionally, what makes the story difficult to talk about is that some of these scenarios are going to impact readers in such a way that they’ll leave a perpetual, warm mark. Someone somewhere is going to read this book while perhaps going through their own difficult marriage, and they’ll come to understand what wholeness truly means. Someone somewhere is going to feel seen and understood with authentic experiences that feel right.

As the story unfolds, it’s never quite clear what the characters will experience, but every single moment feels realistic, making the entire journey and endgame feel earned. There are so many details within the novel that stick out so beautifully that it’s almost hard to believe the book isn’t a thousand pages long. The elements we get, the time we spend with these characters, every little moment flies by so quickly, yet it never feels like something is missing. The amount of heart and character Ryan conveys through simple words and quiet moments is unbeatable. The author also expertly brings to life the innate empathy that stirs when wanting to help those who are struggling in any way. She doesn’t vilify other women, even when they’re in the wrong, and she presents healthy forms of communication between friends and romantic relationships.

Soledad’s journey throughout the novel results in the kind of character arc you’ll find yourself referring to in the form of hardships. How does a woman bounce back from so much heartache, verbal abuse, and betrayal? She learns to love herself, and she discovers what it’s like to know real love that’s worth waiting for. These types of stories remind women that love isn’t something to settle for and that you’re strong enough to handle whatever is in your path so long as you don’t carry burdens alone because no one should have to do that. The found family in the Skyland series and the unabashedly adoring friendships also serve as a gorgeous reminder of the type of friends women should have in their circle. There’s also something to be said about how the story is a gorgeous love letter to parents (or guardians) and children. It’s a love letter to communities, empathy, and a careful examination of humanity in the face of challenges.

Now, while This Could Be Us by Kennedy Ryan is a little on the heavier side with complex topics, it’s imperative to note that the characters are always in the driver’s seat and never take a backseat to the plot, which is the most admirable feat. At the same time, the romance is alive and well and so beautifully rewarding that Judah Cross will undeniably become the kind of “he falls first” book boyfriend we’ll all be swooning over for a long, long time.

Their romance is gorgeously transcendent, vulnerable, hot, and it results in the type of partnership between equals who love and respect each other in profoundly endearing ways. It’s yet another must-read, brilliant accomplishment that continues to prove that Kennedy Ryan is one of the best writers of our time.
