Ghosts Season 4, Episode 12 Review: ‘It’s the End of the World as We Know It and What Were We Talking About?’

Flower and Thor in Ghosts Season 4, Episode 12 as Flower realizes she made a mistake in listening to her cult leader.

Ghosts“It’s the End of the World as We Know It and What Were We Talking About?” is a brilliant doozy and the type of episode that’s undoubtedly going to become a comfort watch for me. From beginning to end, the stakes are high, and with the way writers have been building up to the restaurant’s opening, every minute of it feels earned to showcase how the ghosts will come together for Sam and Jay.

However, the ghosts are also often the ones to cause the most problems, even when their intentions aren’t malicious. Remembering that her cult leader, Bruce, had told them the world would end on February 13, Flower takes matters into her own hands to sabotage the restaurant’s opening when Sam and Jay refuse to hide in the basement before the meteorite hits. Back at the house, Hetty and Trevor form an alliance after they both manipulate the game to decide who’ll be sitting at the ghost’s table.

Ghosts Season 4, Episode 12 Hints at an H-Money Romantic Reunion

If this episode isn’t an absolute dream for every H-Money fan, then I don’t know what is. (I do, actually; it’d be the episode where they finally get back together!) Nothing in a healthy relationship matters the way transparent communication does, and for the first time since “Man of Your Dreams,” Hetty and Trevor address their breakup, what led to it, and how they’re choosing to move forward. So much of the reason why their relationship is one of the show’s most exciting treasures is because of how wildly perfect they are for each other. Two sides of the same coin, yet opposites in considerable ways. It’s how they know exactly how to play the other’s game while simultaneously keeping each other on their toes to keep things between them surprising.

This week, because Trevor is Isaac’s money, he deems himself the one to choose who gets to sit at the ghost’s table. With two seats guaranteed for him and Isaac, he’s left with two more to fill. Alberta and Sas grovel while Hetty ultimately wants to be chosen without doing so, forcing her to take matters into her own hands. It’s a clever parallel to Hetty icing Trevor out of the dinner party back in Season 1, resulting in a sequence that effectively underscores how far they’ve truly come.

But if anyone in this house knows Hetty’s games, it’s Trevor. And the two go head to head in manipulating each other until Hetty asks why he’s being difficult. There, Trevor confesses that he didn’t like the way she ended things between them and how her choice not to talk to him about her decision complicated matters. He doesn’t say the words aloud, but Asher Grodman shows viewers everything they need to see how hurt Trevor really is (and he did so back then, too). In a way, they’re both still hurting—however unconventional that pain might be compared to other forms of longing—because Rebecca Wisocky also underscores how Hetty regrets her decision and has for a while now.

Further, the fact that Hetty chooses to have an honest conversation now is a small but significant stepping stone that results in a sincere apology. The decision they both make to essentially become power friends showcases that we’re likely going back to the place where it all began with them. One of the most interesting details about this conversation in Ghosts Season 4, Episode 12, “It’s the End of the World as We Know It and What Were We Talking About?” is that they aren’t addressing the elephants in the room. Trevor talks about how they went from a power couple to nothing, but what about all the constant little touches? What about their choice to be there for one another during tough times? People in love don’t always see all the little ways they still gravitate toward one another until a big moment cracks their hearts wide open again, and I can’t wait to see how the series executes this matter.

Few tropes are more exciting than the exes to friends to a second chance romance. There are plenty of seemingly meaningless moments between them that we can pick apart (and I have!) but this new alliance can lead to an even healthier relationship because they’ve done the hard part to leave their pain on the kitchen table. They’ve apologized and proven to one another that they care and they can acknowledge their faults.

Yes, Chef! Jay’s Restaurant, Mahesh, Is Officially Open

Last week’s “Thorapy 2: Abandonment Issues” exhibited that Mahesh is a family restaurant, and this week’s events double down on this fact, involving the ghosts in a way that’s so wholesome, I fear I’ll never get over it. Flower never meant to cause the chaos she did, but she’s also the one who comes up with the perfect solution to fix it. And maybe the best pun since Escarghost. Forget Ratatouille, it’s Ghostatouille now. Because Sas, Alberta, and Pete have been present throughout most training processes, they’re the perfect people to guide Sam, Bela, and Mark in their temporary duties as chefs.

With its lengthy title, the episode gives viewers a tremendous reminder of every person’s strength in this story. No one’s left behind, even though various things will fall through the cracks. Flower being the reason everything fumbles and the reason there’s a second chance is an excellent metaphor for how there are also blooms after tragedies. No, it wasn’t the end of the world—metaphorically or literally—but for a beat, it felt like another unnecessary blow that could’ve discouraged Jay. Instead, he gets another reminder of how the ghosts not only have Sam’s back, but they’ve got him, too.

Thematically, Ghosts Season 4, Episode 12, “It’s the End of the World as We Know It and What Were We Talking About?” is another gorgeous reminder of what belonging truly looks like. Bursting with some hilarious jokes, important conversations, and stunning performances, it underscores what a found family is by exploring the big and little ways they each show up for one another.
