Ghosts Season 4, Episode 13 Review: ‘Ghostfellas’

Sam and Jay looking shocked at the mafia news in Ghosts' 'Ghostfellas'

Written by Brian Bahe, Rose McIver’s directorial debut makes “Ghostfellas” one of the most exemplary episodes of Ghosts to date. Hilarious, sharp, and unsurprisingly emotional, the half-hour flies by with the type of hijinks that highlight the show’s strengths while delivering another glorious feast where friendships are concerned.

Since last week’s official opening, Mahesh is doing great, except for when members of the mafia come in and realize that the Arrabiata sauce was stolen from them. Poor Pete learns a dark truth about the travel agency, and for once, Carol does something right. Back at the mansion, the power friends—and former lovers—conspire for their first mission.

Ghosts Season 4, Episode 13 Proves That Carol Has a Heart (Sort of)

Despite Caroline Aaron’s hilariously outstanding performances, Carol is without a doubt the most frustrating ghost. However, we now know that sometimes, she can be a little less selfish and a lot more reasonable. Sure, she lied to Pete about the fact that the travel agency was a cover for her family’s mob, but she does one thing right by giving away the secret that could save Jay from all sorts of terrors from the mob. Most episodes of this series are dramatic, and few things stick, but Ghosts Season 4, Episode 13, “Ghostfellas,” was an intricate spot to store this genuine scare, given how Jay’s restaurant just opened. Since inheriting Woodstone, Sam and Jay have gone through one chaotic downfall after another. (One of them, obviously, in the literal sense.) So, the thought of one more thing happening after all this time makes for a nail-biting half-hour.

And even though this would never turn into some Peaky Blinders level of horrors, the man doesn’t even deserve a single minor inconvenience at this point. He’s been through too much to get Mahesh off the ground and running. Still, with that in mind, it’s always lovely to see the lengths Pete is willing to go to for Sam and Jay. His decision to stand up to Carol and force her to do something because he won’t let her hurt his family made my heart soar.

It’s times like these where the friendships within Woodstone Mansion shine best, and it thematically gives viewers the hopeful joy to cling to. As far as McIver’s directing goes, it’s incredibly impressive how various scenes are framed to showcase the closeness between everyone at Woodstone. In addition, through her vision, some of the small moments amplify the stakes while adding an extra layer of intimacy to underscore the fact that these characters have each other’s backs.

H-Money Power Friends Mission #1

For the duration of this season, we’re going to play a game called Have the Power Friends Become a Couple Yet? Things could’ve happened a lot more smoothly if Isaac and Alberta hadn’t caught them lurking in the corner. Things wouldn’t have been so “platonic” if they didn’t voice how the two of them getting back together would affect the whole household. Would it, Isaac? Would it really?

There’s something so fascinating that happens as a result of the way this episode pans out and it’s the sheer openness to sharing a room. Despite how bothered Trevor seems to be at the start that Hetty’s essentially manipulated Flower to move in with Thor, he has no objections to sharing a room with Hetty. And, of course, neither does she.

She’s all for it, and if it weren’t for Isaac doing the heroic thing to stop the two of them from falling back into the classic rom-com trope, we would’ve been dealing with Power Roommates instead of Power Friends. Still, this is where McIver’s vision as a director astounds me because painting the two of them with the intimacy present in the scene is no small feat. In addition, since Ghosts Season 4, Episode 13 is titled “Ghostfellas,” it’s also easy to appreciate the inclusion of classic romantic comedy tropes in an episode that would’ve otherwise been a mafia stereotype. Here, it still shines a light on revealing all the little ways these characters care about each other, which inadvertently makes it that much easier to keep rooting for Hetty and Trevor despite the opposing forces against them.

There’s plenty to appreciate in the thrilling episode that still latches onto the show’s cozy charm. In what world would something pertaining to the mob be soothing to watch? If any show can nail it, it’s Ghosts, and that’s precisely what the half-hour expertly brings to our screens.

Stray Thoughts

  • Okay, but I need the recipe for this Arrabbiata sauce! Plus, Jay wanting to include something from all the ghosts made me weep. 😭
  • “Lurking in a lot of corners” took me out.
  • Hetty immediately getting defensive about the romance is everything ot me.
  • “I’m gonna have to go into witness protection!”
  • “I mean, yeah, those names scream travel agents.” SAS CONTINUES TO HAVE THE BEST LINES.
